The Pearsons are dealing with everyday dilemmas in the new trailer for This Is Us season 5. When it premiered in 2016, the NBC series followed the relatively simple structure of chronicling several characters' lives across different timelines. But as it has progressed, buoyed by strong ratings and critical acclaim, This Is Us has expanded and widened its focus.

As the previous season drew to a close, viewers got a glimpse of what waited for This Is Us's protagonists in their futures, as Rebecca (Mandy Moore) looks to be slipping away. But the show left plenty of unanswered questions in the present as well, most notably the nasty argument between Kevin (Justin Hartley) and Randall (Sterling K. Brown). Perhaps more than any other pair of characters, the two siblings have frequently butted heads. After releasing a teaser, which highlighted Kevin and Madison's romance (Caitlin Thompson), a full trailer has now been unveiled, shedding new light on the upcoming batch of episodes.

The sneak peek heavily focuses on the profoundly personal fight which occurred between Randall and Kevin in the finale of season 4. It opens with a memorable scene from the show’s first season when Kevin realized he hadn’t been a very good brother to Randall and illustrates how massive their recent falling out has been. The trailer also promises that This Is Us will address the realities of living under the COVID-19 pandemic, and the Black Lives Matter protests. You can check it out below.

There are other revelations in the preview, hinting at a humorously awkward moment for Kate (Chrissy Metz). But what’s striking, and even a little different about the coming season, is the fact that the NBC drama looks to plant itself firmly in the present day. This Is Us has never been shy about incorporating current events, either through sly references or something more substantive, it has more often opted to tell universal stories by focusing on individual characters. By devoting a portion of its promotion to assuring viewers that real-life circumstances will be addressed head-on, it indicates how exceptional the past eight months have been.

This Is Us has remained successful, in part because it has addressed difficult subjects while rarely losing its keen sense of empathy and understanding. The ending to season 4 suggested that Kevin and Randall's wounds may be too bruising to heal quickly, though the trailer offers a reason for hope in that sense also. It features a scene where Randall goes to visit his brother. It could be for reasons other than extending an olive branch. Alternatively, it could be that the characters have been reminded that life is too short for continuous squabbles. Fans won’t have to wait long, as This Is Us season 5 premieres on October 27.
