Although This Is Us is ending with its sixth and final season, it may not be the end for the Pearson family as the cast recently revealed their willingness to return for a movie someday. The popular and critically acclaimed NBC drama stars Mandy Moore, Milo Ventimiglia, Sterling K. Brown, Chrissy Metz, and Justin Hartley as the Pearson family–a family of which the audience sees their past, present, and future. Created by Dan Fogelman, This Is Us has been on the air for five seasons, and with its upcoming sixth and final season, audiences will soon have to say goodbye to Jack, Rebecca, Randall, Kate, and Kevin Pearson and its 9 p.m. time slot on Tuesday nights.
This Is Us has become known as a show that often pulls at the heartstrings of its fans. The series has dealt with personal tragedies experienced by the characters as well as cultural events such as the Coronavirus and the Black Lives Matter protests of last year. However, when the last season ended, things looked grim for the present-day Pearsons, and the season 6 trailer shows the Pearsons in more turmoil. But, in This Is Us fashion, the show promised a brighter not-too-distant future for the "Big Three."
However, in a recent interview with ET Canada, the cast said that they would be open to a This Is Us movie. Ventimiglia shared that although he doubts his character, Jack, would appear, he has no doubt that Kevin's, Kate's, and Randall's stories could find their way to the big screen. “I don’t know if Jack storylines will hold or carry through,” Ventimiglia said before adding, “You can absolutely tell a Kevin-Randall-Kate story. You can absolutely tell present-day stuff.” He was not the only person on board with the idea of a film. Here is what Mandy Moore, who plays Rebecca Pearson, had to say about the idea:
“We were laughing the other day with some of the cast, like, all these shows that are getting rebooted, didn’t they just end five, six, seven years ago? Are we going to be doing ‘This Is Us’ the reboot in six years? I would be game to do anything that would reunite me with everybody here.”
Co-Star Chris Sullivan, who plays Kate's husband Toby, also shared his excitement for the possibility of a This Is Us film, in the interview, saying “I’m always on board for the ‘This Is Us’ family. I don’t know if it’s gonna happen, but that sounds like a great idea. We should start that hashtag.” With only one season left, there is still time to wrap up the Pearson's storyline with a happy, albeit emotional, ending. However, with the recent rise of reboots and revivals, the idea of reviving This Is Us five or six years down the line already excites cast members.
The cast has good point. It seems that everywhere a new reboot or revival is playing on a streaming website. HBO Max has And Just Like That..., the Sex and the City revival. Peacock has Fresh Prince, Saved by the Bell, and Punky Brewster. Paramount+ recently revived iCarly with a more adult twist. However, most of these revivals come nearly ten years after the show left the airwaves. Even iCarly's original series ended nine years ago. Regardless of how long it takes for a show to end and its revival/reboot series to begin, fans will always have the original series they came to know and love. Fans do not have to worry about a reboot series or film just yet. Instead, they can sit back and watch the final season of This Is Us when it airs January 4 on NBC.
