Even though the Pearson family on NBC's hit drama series This Is Us are all related in one way or another, they all manage to have distinctly different personalities. From Randall's need for order to Kate's keen observation, every character has a different set of strengths, weaknesses, and traits that make them who they are.

The Enneagram Chart gives insight into who a person is at their core and why they act the way they do. It details what any given person needs to succeed, and what might be their downfall. Each member of the Pearson family embodies a different type of enneagram, due to their unique character traits and personality quirks.

Type 1 - Randall Pearson - The Perfectionist

Randall Pearson from This Is Us

From a young age, Randall Pearson was deemed the smartest member of his family. He set goals and achieved them, and eventually became obsessed with being the perfect son, husband, and father, and having things go his way.

Type 1's are idealists. They want things to go exactly the way they planned in their head, and have trouble giving in to any other outcome. This stubborn attitude can lead to a lot of conflict, as arguing with a perfectionist can go nowhere. On the other hand, Randall's go-getter energy has done a lot of good for his family and the city he lives in, as he never backs down and constantly strives for success.

Type 2 - Rebecca Pearson - The Helper

Rebecca Pearson is one of television's best moms. She gave birth to triplets, adopted a son the day one of hers died, became a widow in her 40s, and has maintained an optimistic spirit despite the many challenges thrown her way. She has always put her children and marriage first, striving to be the best version of herself for those around her.

Type 2's are helpers, caregivers, and nurturers. Every decision Rebecca has made has been decided upon with love (even the bad ones) such as her choice to keep information about Randall's biological father a secret. 2's are loving and accepting, though they also avoid conflict to a fault. Rebecca has tried her best as a mother, and given how much her children adore her, it's safe to say she's done a good job.

Type 3 - Kevin Pearson - The Achiever

Kevin Pearson has always strived to be a good man just like his father; he's just had a lot of bumps in the road. Despite the ups and downs he's gone through, he has always been driven, even when his romantic and personal relationships have gotten rather messy and unpredictable.

Type 3's are achievers. Kevin wants to live the life his father did; he wants to raise a family, fall in love, and live happily ever after. He won't settle for anything less than his goals, which is both a positive and negative character trait, as his stubborn attitude and tunnel vision typically blind him from doing the right thing.

Type 4 - Toby Damon - The Individualist

This Is Us Toby Damon

Toby Damon has never let the Pearson family get in the way of who he is as a person. Whether that be his own morals and opinions, or the fact that everything they do and say goes, Toby has remained true to himself and has even helped his wife Kate become her own entity outside of her family.

Type 4's are creative, honest, and sensitive. Toby embodies all of these traits, as he has evolved from the beginning of the series into a completely changed and more mature man. On the flip side of that, he has also become more closed off and individualized, causing a rift (and an eventual divorce) between Kate and himself as he has discovered more of what he wants out of life.

Type 5 - Kate Pearson - The Observer

Kate was never the actor or performer like her brother Kevin, nor was she the extremely intelligent and hands-on person her brother Randall was. Instead, Kate has lived her life as an observer, taking in her surroundings and supporting the people around her when they need it most.

Type 5's are investigators. They problem solve, just like Kate has at her job at the elementary school. Kate has a big heart, and her relationship with her mother has shown that despite their differences she has always been there for her, picking up on what she needs and giving her the love and empathy she deserves.

Type 6 - Madison Simons - The Loyalist

Madison has spent most of the series as Kate's chatty best friend, and in recent years has had a more pivotal role in the Pearson family as the mother of Kevin's children. Despite her constant presence in their lives, Madison has often felt like the odd man out, constantly longing for them to give her the affection and attention she's given them.

Type 6's are loyalists. They have trust issues but love hard. Madison wants to be a part of the Pearson family but just isn't sure how, especially given how she and Kevin's relationship has been less than ideal. She wants to belong but has strayed away from the family because she's afraid of getting hurt, as 6's want nothing more than a sense of permanence and purpose.

Type 7 - Jack Pearson - The Enthusiast

There could be a case made for Jack Pearson having any of the enneagram types, but at his core, he's an enthusiast. Jack was at his best when he was on a high, whether that be showing up for his kids or his wife or doing something great and hero worthy.

Type 7's are adventurers. They seek pleasure and playfulness, just as Jack always has. Jack wanted to give his kids the best life possible, and have a once-in-a-lifetime love story with Rebecca. He sought out excitement and happiness and felt crushed when things were dull, boring, or depressing. His best moments were the highs and his worst were the lowest lows, proving that he needed freedom and optimism in order to be his truest self.

Type 8 - Beth Pearson - The Challenger

Beth has never been afraid to say exactly what is on her mind, especially in her marriage to Randall. She has always been honest and straightforward, refusing to be undermined or neglected.

Type 8's are challengers. They're argumentative, but not necessarily in a negative way. They take charge and pave the way for success, which is why she and Randall are such a perfect match. Beth is strong, assertive, and confident in her actions and ideas. She is passionate and defensive of her loved ones, making her a great wife and mother.

Type 9 - Miguel Rivas - The Peacemaker

Miguel was always a great best friend to Jack, especially after he passed away and Miguel made sure that Rebecca and the kids got on their feet following the heartbreaking loss. Miguel's greatest strength has always been his kindness and ability to support others.

Type 9's are peacemakers. They don't want any trouble and avoid it at all costs. Even though Miguel was dealt a tricky hand (marrying his late best friend's widow), he remained positive and in good spirits even when the Pearson children took jabs at him. Miguel has always wanted what was best for Rebecca and has kept the peace when her children disturbed it.
