Once again, The Thing is making a comeback, this time with filmmaker John Carpenter playing an integral role in the production of the movie. There have been several iterations of The Thing over the years, with the science fiction horror film itself based on the 1938 novella Who Goes There? The film franchise is better known for its cult following than its critical popularity, but with horror reboots being all the rage right now, this could be the perfect time to bring back The Thing.

John Carpenter directed The Thing in 1982, which is actually a reboot of the 1951 film The Thing From Another World. The Kurt Russell film was not particularly appreciated, earning less than $20 million at the box office. It was roasted by critics too, although it has since gained a cult following, as evidenced by the film's 84 percent approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Matthijs van Heijningen Jr. directed a prequel of the same name in 2011, which also bombed at the box office and has a much less favorable 35 percent approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

A decade later, The Thing may be ready for another triumphant return. Variety reports Carpenter is developing a new reboot for the movie, which he first commented on at the Fantasia International Film Festival over the weekend. It wasn't entirely clear from Carpenter's comments whether or not he would be directing the reboot, but if he did, it would be his first time behind the camera since 2010's The Ward.

The collaboration for a reboot would be between Carpenter and Blumhouse Productions. Jason Blum's company has been churning out movies at a rapid rate over the past few years. That includes several reboots/sequels of existing properties, such as Amityville: The Awakening. Most relevantly, Blumhouse Productions was one of the companies behind the 2018 reboot of Halloween, which Carpenter composed the score for (he directed the 1978 original and composed the score for that as well). Carpenter is composing the score for the sequel Halloween Kills.

This new version of The Thing was announced in January, but the inclusion of Carpenter is a good sign that the project is moving forward. Carpenter has refused to direct a sequel to The Thing for years, but horror fans will no doubt be thrilled that he is involved with this reboot. The Thing is still in a very early stage of development it seems, so it may take time for more updates to come to light. Still, it's exciting to see yet another version of The Thing is on its way with its original shepherd.
