Edgar Wright, Simon Pegg and Nick Frost are finally prepped to reteam for The World's End: the finale to their "Blood & Ice Cream" (or, rather, "Three Flavors Cornetto") trilogy, after cult hits Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz.
While Universal has not yet officially greenlit World's End, production is slated to get underway this September, with a Spring 2013 release date in mind. The project isn't expected to be too pricy (much like previous Wright, Pegg and Frost team efforts), so it should encounter little resistance in making those dates.
Similar to how Shaun is a tongue-in-cheek love letter to George A. Romero's brand of zombie cinema - with Hot Fuzz serving as a salute to brazen Hollywood buddy cop flicks - The World's End is expected to be a playful subversion of apocalyptic thriller genre fare. Wright will once again direct Pegg and Frost, based on a script he co-penned with Pegg (with the following logline, via Deadline).
20 years after attempting an epic pub crawl, five childhood friends reunite when one of them becomes hell bent on trying the drinking marathon again. They are convinced to stage an encore by mate Gary King, a 40-year old man trapped at the cigarette end of his teens, who drags his reluctant pals to their home town and once again attempts to reach the fabled pub, The World’s End. As they attempt to reconcile the past and present, they realize the real struggle is for the future, not just theirs but humankind’s. Reaching The World’s End is the least of their worries.
Wright, Pegg and Frost seem to bring out the best in one another, as their past collaborations (beginning with the 1999 TV show Spaced) have been praised for striking a great balance between laughs, sentiment and technical flair; that their separate endeavors (Scott Pilgrim vs. the World, Paul) are generally regarded as not having scaled quite the same heights as Shaun and Hot Fuzz, is testament to that. As it were, World's End sounds like another potential home run for the trio.
We will continue to keep you posted on the status of The World's End as the story develops.
