Warner Home Video has recently announced that the classic film musical, The Wizard of Oz, is going to be showing theatrically for ONE NIGHT ONLY in HD. The one-night special showing will take place next month, Wednesday, September 23rd at 7:00 p.m. local time, marking the first time the film has been shown in high definition on the big-screen.
The purpose of the event (beyond the awesomeness of seeing The Wizard of Oz in HD) is to celebrate the film's 70th anniversary - that's right, it was in 1939 that audiences were first wowed by one of the most enduring and loved (family) films ever made. I must just point out that the to-the-exact-date anniversary would be six days ago, on August 15th; on that date in '39 The Wizard of Oz was released theatrically in the U.S. (specifically in California).
Wonder why they didn't go for that date...
Tickets are obviously limited since this is a one-time event (showing in just 440 theaters), but are available from select box offices and also online at www.fathomevents.com, where you can also find information on specific theater locations and ticket prices.
The event is going to be introduced by Robert Osborne, classic film historian and host of Turner Classic Movies, who will talk about the film beforehand, sharing facts and stories about the timeless movie. Also showing will be We're Off To See The Wizard, a look at how L. Frank Baum's original children's book was transformed into the worldwide known movie. The retrospective includes behind-the-scenes footage and rare musical outtakes.

I probably won't be able to get a chance to see this special event since it's taking place in the U.S. and I'm all the way over here in the UK (even for the Land of Oz I don't think I'd shell out the plane ticket price for just one night). However, if I HAD the opportunity, I'd absolutely make the effort for this. The Wizard of Oz is truly one of the all-time greats, and to see it remastered in HD and on the big-screen like this would just be fantastic.
So are you planning on going to see The Wizard of Oz in HD?
As stated, this special one-night event will take place on Wednesday, September 23rd at 7:00pm local time. Again, you can book your tickets at select box offices or order them online here.
