The Witcher III is an amazing game, but it's a bit light on content in certain areas. In contrast to games like Skyrim, which has a ton of armor-related mods to expand the player's arsenal and wardrobe, The Witcher III has far less to choose from. However, even a few of these mods can go a long way towards expanding equipment options.
With just a few clicks, gamers can overhaul the armor in the game with new sets, replacers or complete overhauls. Some are just for show, while others react dynamically to how the player levels up in-game. It's all about choice, and the more options available to the player, the better and more varied the experience will be.
Witcher 2 Gear
Some players don't mind the armor and clothing available in The Witcher III. However, there are some who simply prefer those of the previous game. The author of Witcher 2 Gear created a mod that replaces approximately 80% of these items with those of the prequel, which is a nice touch for those who want something a bit different.
Armors, pants, boots, gloves and sword belts all get a rework. It's different enough from the base Witcher III game to be immediately noticeable, and some may prefer the darker and more aggressive styling of some of these armors and items.
Custom Leveling Armor
This mod adds a customized set of gear into The Witcher III that scales according to level. The author has created two versions to appeal to two different types of gamers - those who prefer a more vanilla-style game experience, and those who want armor with a few more options attached.
The former injects the armor into the base game, while the other can be added via a console command. The mod page continues a full description of how the new armor set works, and how the values are affected both by levels and stats.
GHC Armors
Both offer an interesting new twist on armor, with the Baron Set taking on a dark aesthetic with chainmail trimmings, while the Skellige armor opts for a more exotic look. It contains highly detailed gauntlets and bicep armor with etched patterns in an aged bronze look.
Vagabond Armor DLC
The author of this mod went to great lengths to overcome The Witcher III's modding difficulty curve, just for the sake of adding this armor set into the game. It's essentially a long coat intended more for visual flair rather than stat-based armor protection.
The results are fantastic and gives Geralt an intimidating and menacing new look that goes far beyond his basic armor set. It's immersive mods like this that make gamers want to spend more time in the game, which might help in uncovering a few hidden things that many Witcher III players fail to discover.
Geralt Cloak
Many RPG adventure gamers enjoy the thought of playing a shadowy, mysterious figure hidden behind a cloak. It's easy to picture such a character strolling through town and intimidating the villagers into giving him a wide berth, and a healthy degree of respect.
The Geralt Cloak mod achieves this handily. It shrouds Geralt in a highly detailed cloak that gives him a newfound presence that just isn't otherwise there. It looks especially great at night, amidst the backdrop of a shimmering sky, or the light of a nearby campfire.
Shades Of Iron
This is one of the rare Witcher III mods to be featured on Github, and it's an excellent resource for those who want more armor choices in the game. The mod adds a ton of weaponry and armor into the game, but it doesn't stop there.
It also adds 25 new enemies and 542 new items into the game, which is astonishing. In total, there are 18 new armor sets for Geralt, plus 30 swords, 3 daggers, and several spears. The armor sets include gameplay buffs, as well. The mod page has a full description of what does what.
Gryphon Knight Armors Mod
This mod was intended to replace the Gryphon series of armors with variants that look like something out of the Dark Souls franchise. The description on the mod page is relatively scant, but there is a YouTube link that shows off the armor in a better light.
It may not be the most lore-friendly, especially given the necessity of Geralt's physical presence, but it's an excellent alternative for those who want to vary the game experience a bit. If nothing else, it's worth an install just to test out.
Shields
With a name like Shields, any gamer would expect that this mod focuses primarily on that particular facet of the armor set. However, there's more to it than that. The mod does add shields to the game which can block physical strikes and arrows, making it an excellent add-on all by itself.
However, it also adds 56 new pieces of armor, 12 hoods, 2 cloaks, and new Witcher-specific armors into the game. That's a lot of content for such tersely named mod, and gamers should definitely give it a shot to see if they like what it brings to the table.
Geralt The Wild Hunter
Geralt might be a good guy, but there's no reason he can't look like a complete badass at the same time. This mod helps achieve that look by injecting The Witcher III with several highly intimidating and rough-looking armor sets that are a huge departure from Geralt's baseline look.
The mod effectively resizes certain armors while adding a few additional elements at the same time. The helmets are an especially nice touch, looking like something straight out of the 1982 Conan film adaptation. Even Roach gets decked out with a better-looking armor set.
The Butcher Of Blaviken Witcher's Set
This mod is actually an updated and streamlined version of the Roaming Witcher's Armor mod from author 4strings, and it's an excellent armor mod by itself. It features a single set of armor, plus a steel and silver sword to complete the perfect ensemble for Geralt.
It can be obtained by completing two master craftsmen's quests in the game, which is a nice way to inject lore-friendliness into the experience. The armor is dark, desaturated, and intimidating, which is the perfect fit for someone like Geralt, who rarely shows his softer side.
