Misha Colllins reveals that Castiel could return to the Supernatural franchise in future episodes of The Winchesters. The spinoff, executive produced by Jensen Ackles and Robbie Thompson, tracks the early stages of John Winchester (Drake Rodger) and Mary Campbell's (Meg Donnelly) relationship. Despite its different timeline and the introduction of the Akrida, by including appearances from Dean Winchester (Ackles) and others, The Winchesters still manages to feature several tie-ins to Supernatural.

Collins portrayed the angel Castiel through 12 seasons of Supernatural, befriending Sam (Jared Padalecki) and Dean early on. In a recent interview with Deadline, the actor said that discussions about involving Castiel in The Winchesters season 1 took place, though it was unable to become a reality. As for the future, Collins said:

"We did have conversations about Castiel rejoining the Supernatural universe for the end of this first season of The Winchesters but for various reasons, it didn’t work out. But Jensen [Ackles] and I are certainly open to it. We’ve had several conversations about it and would love to explore how to best do that in subsequent seasons of The Winchesters."

How Castiel Could Return In The Winchesters

The Winchesters has brought back a number of Supernatural characters already, including Henry Winchester (Gil McKinney), Bobby Singer (Jim Beaver), and Jack Kline (Alexander Calvert). How Dean connected to the story was revealed in the season finale, during which he explained that he was dead and came from another Earth. Because Castiel is an angel capable of resurrection and time travel, his return could happen at any point, and given how his story ended in Supernatural, it would be interesting to see where the character is now.

When Castiel was last seen, he was taken by the Empty in order to save Dean's life, though it was later revealed that Jack brought him back. While it is unclear what his role in The Winchesters could look like, there would be a lot of excitement surrounding his appearance, should it come. A fan-favorite during his time on Supernatural, Castiel became an important character, and his friendship with Dean in particular was followed throughout.

There are currently no updates regarding The Winchesters season 2, and Thompson previously shared that with the uncertainty at The CW, it could be a while. With the success of Supernatural over the years, and the connections made in the spinoff, a renewal would seem likely. For now, those eager to see Castiel in the future of The Winchesters can be sure to keep an eye out for any more news.
