Warning: The article contains major spoilers from recent The Winchester episodes. The Winchesters showrunner Robbie Thompson gives a cautious update if the series will be renewed for a season 2. A prequel to The CW's popular fantasy series Supernatural, The Winchesters follows John Winchester and Mary Campbell, the parents of brothers Sam and Dean Winchester from the original series. The show sees John and Marry searching for their missing fathers, all while dealing with demons and monsters alongside their three friends Ada, Carlos, and Latika. Future seasons of The Winchesters have yet to be confirmed following The CW's acquisition by Nexstar Media Group in October 2022.

According to SFX Magazine (via CBR), Thompson's current priority is to focus on crafting a compelling narrative for The Winchesters season 1. While he did not rule out the possibility of the show having a season 2, he clarified that he does not know for sure what the future of The Winchesters will be. Check out Thompson's full statement below:

"I'll say that both our partners at the studio and network have been focused on the same. It is a time of uncertainty for all of us. We don't know. But what we do know is the task at hand in front of us and we're really focused on putting forth the best story that we can."

Will The Winchesters Get Renewed For A Season 2?

Despite no confirmation yet that The Winchesters season 2 will happen, season 1 is already setting up an adventure that could span multiple seasons if the show were to get renewed. The most recent episode saw the return of Samuel Campbell, Mary's father, who is trying to find a specific type of magic that may be able to stop the monstrous Akrida. Mary also decided that she wanted to be with John, sealing the fate of their future in Supernatural. However, at the end of episode 8, John discovers that Samuel has a photo of the man who gave him a letter from his own missing father, Henry Winchester, who turns out to be Dean – John's son in the present-day Supernatural timeline.

The probability that time travel will become a major focus in The Winchesters sets up many possibilities for season 2. Time travel magic is no stranger to the Supernatural universe, but it remains unclear at what point in the original show's timeline Dean could have traveled back to the 1970s. With Thompson stating that The Winchesters season 1 is the current and main focus for him, The CW, and the production companies involved in making the series, it's possible that he may close out any questions regarding Henry's whereabouts and Dean's time travel capabilities by the end of the season. However, the many possibilities of Dean's presence in the past make The Winchesters ripe for a season 2 filled with interesting stories and twists on the Supernatural universe.

One major factor that may threaten The Winchesters season 2 is changes at The CW following Nexstar's acquisition of the company. In November, it was reported that The CW would not be ordering any more episodes for the show, keeping it at its original 13-episode order. This has put The Winchesters' future into a gray area, as it's still unclear whether the show will be renewed or not despite season 1 having only 5 episodes left. Even if The Winchesters season 2 doesn't come to fruition, though, it should put some ease that Thompson wants to make season 1 the best it can be, even if the series doesn't continue past it.
