It appears that a tease made in season 4 of The Walking Dead regarding Norman Reedus' Daryl is finally paying off. A comment in a season 4 episode suggested that Daryl would outlast the other characters, and by the looks of things, that may actually be the way everything will shake out by the end of the series.

The cast of The Walking Dead looked drastically different in season 4. At the beginning, the main group consisted of Rick, Carl, Daryl, Glenn, Carol, Maggie, Michonne, Beth, Bob, Tyreese, and Sasha. The season started with Rick's people still living in the prison, but as the season went on, their dispute with the Governor reignited, forcing them to move on from the prison. This is also the season that introduced Abraham, Rosita, and Eugene to the show, though the two groups don't merge until the end of the season.

In The Walking Dead season 4, episode 11, titled "Still," an inebriated Beth tells Daryl that she'll be dead soon, but that he will be "the last man standing." Despite Daryl protests, Beth was confident in her prediction. Fast forward five years later, and Beth's words concerning Daryl have so far proven to be eerily accurate on both counts. Unfortunately for Beth, she was right about her own fate: she died in season 5 after being shot by mistake in the standoff at the hospital.

Daryl holds dead Beth in The Walking Dead

Nearly the entire season 4 group is dead or gone. Bob died even earlier than Beth. Tyreese was killed not long after Beth, Glenn was murdered by Negan in the opening scene of season 7, Sasha was killed off later in the season, followed by Carl in season 8. Rick left the show in season 9, as did Maggie (though she will be back for season 11). Michonne will depart the series at some point in season 10. By season 11, all that may be left of the season 4 group could be Daryl, Maggie, and Carol.

Was Beth right about Daryl? Every season, Beth's prediction comes one step closer to being realized. Even a large chunk of the characters who have joined the show since season 4 are now dead. Daryl, Michonne, Maggie, and Carol have outlived them all. With Carol becoming more reckless as season 10 has progressed, the show could soon lose another original group member. So by the time The Walking Dead finally ends, it may not be a stretch to say that Daryl could actually end up as the "last man standing."
