For the past few years there have been few shows on television capable of going toe to toe with the event that is a season premiere or finale of The Walking Dead. While Game of Thrones might have the show beat on pure spectacle, AMC's not-so-humble zombie series has shambled its way to ratings victories time and again, no matter how divisive its beginnings or endings are. This year, the show's producers promise to deliver a finale that will satisfy fans – perhaps even those put off by the show's incessant cliffhanger-loving storytelling or the excessive brutality of the season 7 premiere. A satisfying conclusion to the incessantly long buildup to war with Negan would make the promise of season 8 a much more appealing proposition, and it might even see the show earn back some of the viewers it has shed over the past few months.
'The First Day of the Rest of Your Life' has a lot on its plate, so hopefully it will deliver the sort of fast-paced finale that leaves viewers with plenty to discuss during the long wait for season 8. Over the past few weeks the show has been taking the slow road to an inevitable conflict, opening the door for resolution on a number of threads that range from Sasha and Eugene's fate to Dwight potentially betraying Negan to Rick finally taking the fight to the Saviors. That's a lot to see unfold in a single hour of television, but it could lead to one explosive finale.
With that said, if you want to discuss the goings-on of The Walking Dead season 7 finale – which will no doubt end the lives of more than one character on the show – without spoiling things for others, this is the place to do so. And remember: everyone participating here is doing so with the understanding that others have seen the episode in question.
The Walking Dead will return for season 8 in the fall of 2017.
