One of the CW’s most popular dramas, The Vampire Diaries always balanced expertly between romantic entanglements and supernatural terror. As many fans know, Elena Gilbert ended up being torn between the Salvatore brothers; although her ultimate choice was definitively problematic (picking either one of them is really), these romances were always at the heart of the show. Elena wasn’t the only one entrenched in drama.

Almost every character had a romantic partner at one time or another. And while there were the so-called epic romances like Elena’s, some couples seemed to come out of left-field. For the characters audiences remembered fondly, this created several partnerships that were just as memorable. For better or for worse.

Stefan And Katherine

After his relationship with Elena ended, Stefan was seen to get into numerous relationships. However, one that fans did not see coming was his brief reunion with Katherine. As many fans remember, Katherine turned Stefan into a vampire during the Civil War and it seemed after she betrayed essentially everyone she ever knew, there was no hope for them again.

Only after Katherine took the cure for vampirism and begun helping Stefan with his trauma did the two start spending more time together (which led to their romance). It came as much of a great surprise to fans considering everything she had put Stefan would through.

Caroline And Klaus

Klaus and Caroline almost kiss

It appeared that there could not have been a more unlikely duo. Klaus was over 1,000 years old while Caroline was still in high school and a newborn vampire. She also happened to be in love with someone else when Klaus showed interest in her. Klaus was insistent that Caroline and he belonged together, though there was no real evidence for that.

Eventually, Caroline fell out of her relationship with Tyler and consummated her feelings for Klaus. However, Caroline never admitted to having any romantic feelings for Klaus, which made the coupling even more baffling.

Elena And Liam

Liam Davis in The Vampire Diaries

It was a rare occurrence when Elena had a relationship outside of the Salvatore family. After Damon’s death, Elena compelled her feelings for him away. This was the only way she could have formed an attachment to someone else. Her liaison with Liam was casual, but still, it was the only time she didn't date Stefan or Damon.

After so much drama in the love triangle, it seemed odd that Elena would try so hard to be with someone normal. Especially since she was aware of the dangers and difficulties that came with dating a vampire, and knew how much of a burden it could have on a person. The relationship was short-lived, especially when Damon came back from the prison world.

Rebekah And Stefan

Stefan’s connection to the Originals occurred in the 1920s when he was in his Ripper state. His intense violent blackouts lasted more than a year and at that time, he went on a rampage with Original vampire, Rebekah.

The fact that Stefan knew both Klaus and Rebekah before they came to Mystic Falls was incredibly convenient. To remember the pain that he had caused and his relationship with Rebekah, Klaus had to compel him to remember his lost days. However, his past dalliance in the past was a twist even he didn’t see coming. Stefan valued his humanity so it was strange when he and Rebekah rekindled a relationship that occurred during his most violent days.

Alaric And Jo

Twice burned in the love department, it didn’t seem that Alaric would ever try his hand at it again. Both his previous partners died and then he was turned into a vampire himself. Surprisingly he did find love with Jo. Their relationship was unexpected as Jo had barely been introduced as a character before they vaulted into a hasty engagement.

Ric got a short-lived marriage and children but was once again heartbroken. Another woman he loved was killed. Another reason their marriage and Jo’s death was out of the blue.

Stefan And Caroline

One of the most disappointing aspects of The Vampire Diaries was the destruction of Stefan and Caroline’s friendship. Many times, the show made a point that Caroline reminded Stefan so much of his best friend Lexie. He guided her through her vampiric transition and their dynamic was steadfastly platonic.

The romantic relationship between them was sudden and lacked the heat of most of the relationships on the show. Even when they vowed to get married, there was no chemistry between the two. Their union was the result of needing Stefan to be with someone and she was the only one left.

Matt And Rebekah

One of the show's most tragic characters was Matt Donovan. He was the only one that maintained his humanity through the course of the show. Tragedy struck his love life like it did many. When he wasn’t being heartbroken by Elena or Caroline, he was mostly by himself. Rebekah set her sights on him for no real reason other than the fact he was the only human around that wasn’t taken.

The flirtation was as quick to start as it was to end. The match was odd as she was constantly murdering people, and he was the only decent person on the show. Matt barely seemed fazed by the relationship and Rebekah didn’t stick around to see it through.

Tyler And Liv

Liv and Tyler in the vampire diaries

Rarely without a girlfriend, Tyler's character development surrounded his relationships. After treating Vicky terribly in her human life, Tyler became a better person after Caroline helped him through his werewolf transition. Tragically, their relationship couldn't survive his blood feud with Klaus.

Tyler moved on relatively quickly when he arrived at college. While in class, he was seen to hit it off with Liv Parker - one of the witches of the Gemini Coven. The relationship was not built to last, especially after Liv's brother Kai killed their entire coven and Tyler was left alone. However, fans weren't particularly sad when this romance came to a close. Especially since it did sort of feel so random in the first place.

Alaric And Caroline

Alaric and Caroline stand next to each other in The Vampire Diaries.

Alaric and Caroline’s relationship was introduced as a plot twist which is what made their union so strange. There had never been anything romantic between them, even when Caroline had been the surrogate mother to Alaric’s twin girls. Caroline took up the mantle of their mother and even got engaged to Alaric.

What was disheartening about this plot was how much love was lacking in their relationship. Alaric was content to go on living in separate bedrooms while in a marriage with Caroline. This wasn’t fair to either of them and it was a relief when they broke it off.

Bonnie And Enzo

One of the most surprising relationships was also the most beautiful. Bonnie was never a fan of vampires and Enzo was at the top of the list. Bonnie had been abused and strung along by magical forces. It seemed that Enzo would be the last person she would ever be with.

Bonnie and Enzo only got together in the last couple of seasons and yet they had the most supportive and giving relationship on the entire show. They were truly selfless with each other and never gave up on each other. The road wasn’t easy and yet they consistently put in the work and chose each other.
