When both Klaus and Caroline returned for the Legacies finale, fans were hopeful they would get to interact, providing more closure for their relationship. Unfortunately, that didn't happen as Klaus was only able to send a brief message to Hope. Regardless, fans still have hope for Klaroline in the afterlife.

From his earliest appearances on The Vampire Diaries, Klaus saw something in Caroline that few other characters did, pursuing her openly and extravagantly. The character who feared she was always the second choice finally got to see what it was like to have someone focus all of their affection on her, and it gave her the confidence to grow into one of the best characters on the show. For those disappointed by their failure to interact in the Legacies finale, there are ten episodes of The Vampire Diaries and The Originals they can turn to for a chance to relive the epic romance.

TVD Season 3, Episode 11: Our Town

Caroline Smiling At Her Birthday Cake

Caroline began as just a pawn in Klaus's schemes when he forced Tyler to bite her on her 18th birthday. However, when he eventually went to save Caroline's life, he saw something in her that changed everything. Klaus showed her tenderness and compassion that he showed no one else, and gave her the hope she needed to keep going.

Though this episode is not entirely devoted to Klaus and Caroline, it does give audiences their first glimpse at the two's relationship dynamics. Klaus is ruthless and willing to hurt anybody to get what he wants while Caroline is struggling with being a vampire, knowing she will never be able to truly grow up. Somehow, despite all of that, they end up connecting with each other.

TVD Season 3, Episode 15: All My Children

Vampire Diaries Kol and Klaus talk to Caroline

The Mystic Falls gang works together to try to eliminate the Originals once and for all, but they need Klaus out of the way while they set their plan in motion. While most of the episode focuses on the larger plot, this episode is one of the best examples of the group throwing Caroline at Klaus as a distraction.

This episode captures all the angst involved in their relationship because the Great Evil Klaus Mikaelson is a love-sick puppy for Caroline Forbes. She uses that against him, which breaks his heart and pushes him into a position where he's more willing to attack her and her friends to ease his pain.

TVD Season 4, Episode 7: My Brother's Keeper

Klaus and Caroline go on a date in The Vampire Diaries.

While chaos reigns with Shane, Caroline tries to do right by her community at the Miss Mystic Falls pageant. Klaus chooses this opportunity to make her pay up on a promised date with him. While she has been largely antagonistic towards him before this, their first date gives her the chance to get to know him better, which seems to be the start of her reciprocating his feelings.

Caroline and Klaus share several cute moments together, allowing fans to see the lengths Klaus has gone to in order to get to know Caroline better. They're clearly attracted to each other, and Klaus looks out for Caroline when nobody else will. As she struggles with Elena's personality transplant, they bond, and he shows her what being loved by him would be like.

TVD Season 4, Episode 13: Into The Wild

Klaus gives Caroline his blood in The Vampire Diaries

Unfortunately for Klaroline fans, seeing the two fall apart is just as important as seeing them coming together. Caroline's relationship with Tyler, combined with Tyler's insistence on attacking Klaus, makes it so a horrible conflict is inevitable. Reminiscent of their first meeting, Klaus bites Caroline to hurt Tyler, an act that goes against all his professed affection for her.

Klaus antagonizes everyone, taking pleasure in the pain that mortally wounding Caroline has caused her friends. But when it comes down to it, he can't let her die. In her last moments, Caroline tells Klaus that she sees the humanity in him, specifically through his love for her. While certainly a darker chapter of their love story, the two are pulled together despite themselves.

TVD Season 4, Episode 23: Graduation

Caroline, Elena, and Bonnie in The Vampire Diaries

When Mystic Falls comes under attack, Caroline repeatedly calls Klaus, begging for his help. Though it seems as though he is ignoring her, he shows up at just the right time, admitting that he was already on his way because of her graduation announcement.

Not only does Klaus save the day, but he also gives Caroline a graduation present he knows will make her happy: Tyler's freedom. This clearly demonstrates his desire to see her happy superseding his own need for vengeance, and is accompanied by the iconic Klaroline line: "He's your first love. I intend to be your last. However long it takes."

TVD Season 5, Episode 11: 500 Years of Solitude

Caroline and Klaus kissing in The Vampire Diaries.

It's arguable that this is a TVD filler episode and it's admittedly mostly about Katherine, as she is on death's door. However, her impending death brings Klaus back to town, though, which gives fans a few scenes which make the episode mandatory viewing. Klaus tells Caroline that he will leave her alone forever if she just admits how she feels about him, which leads to the infamous Klaroline sex scene.

While fans picked up on serious attraction from both parties long before this episode, it's the first time Caroline acts on her feelings, rather than pushing them aside. Though her friends view it as a mistake, Caroline never regrets the fling, and her affection for Klaus is on full display in their later interactions.

The Originals Season 5, Episode 1: Where You Left Your Heart

Klaus and Caroline reunite in France in The Originals.

After Klaus is forced to be away from his daughter for her safety, he shuts down and goes on violent killing sprees. Who would his family think to call on but Caroline? She dealt with Klaus at his darkest and found the good in him, and that's exactly what she does here.

She gets Klaus to admit that his massacres are intended as protection for Hope and not violence for no reason. She also helps him open up to reconciling with his daughter, letting him know, "I happen to think you're someone worth knowing."

The Originals Season 5, Episode 6: What, Will, I, Have, Left

Klaus and Caroline holding coffee in The Originals.

When Hope disappears from the Salvatore School, Klaus and Caroline go on a road trip to track her down. The two have the kind of easy, playful dynamic that Klaus doesn't show anybody else (except maybe Hayley), and they joke about their former dynamic, specifically Caroline's interest in bad boys significantly older than her.

This episode is heartwarming because it shows just how much both characters have grown. Their love for their children helps them bond, and they read as two adults who still love each other, though in a more relaxed manner than their frenzied will-they-won't-they dynamic from the past.

The Originals Season 5, Episode 12: The Tale Of Two Wolves

Klaus and Caroline holding hands in The Originals.

As the Hollow threatens to kill Hope, Klaus concocts a plan to save her which requires the assistance of Caroline's daughters. While Alaric is fully against helping Klaus, Caroline sees the good Klaus is trying to do by putting his daughter first.

This episode forces Caroline to confront her feelings about Klaus, as she's unlikely to get another chance. Klaus's sacrificial nature shows just how far he's come, but the idea of losing another person she loves breaks Caroline's heart. Klaus's death would no longer be a victory over a tyrant but instead is a tragedy.

The Originals Season 5, Episode 13: When The Saints Go Marching In

Klaus and Caroline looking at each other in the Originals

It's only fitting that after Klaus came to Mystic Falls, Caroline would go to New Orleans. She calls in the tour of the city that Klaus promised her years before, and the two think about how life might have been had she taken him up on his offer to come with him. She admits that she probably would have ended up with him, after teasing him another few centuries, a confession that would normally bring Klaroline fans joy.

But then she talks Klaus into saying goodbye to Hope, says goodbye to him herself, and walks away, leaving him to his sacrifice. Like all her others, Caroline's most devoted love affair ends in death. While this is an essential episode for the ship, fans might be better off skipping it unless they're looking for heartache.
