Love triangles and drama are what The Vampire Diaries was built on, but it only took a few seasons for it to evolve into something else entirely. While it resembled a soap opera during the pilot episode, the cast brought the show to new heights.

The characters became more fleshed out as the series went on, and they each showcased multiple sides of their personality. Sarcasm, sass, and wit are common traits among them, which kept The Vampire Diaries from taking itself too seriously. But not everyone shares the same sense of humor, and there are characters who are funnier than others.

Bonnie Bennett

Bonnie Bennett looking pensive in The Vampire Diaries

Bonnie goes through so much pain in the series that no one could've expected her to be an optimist. Her ability to look on the bright side of things and offer hope when all is lost is just one of the many things that make her such a strong character.

She's a fun person to be around, but Bonnie's funniest quotes in The Vampire Diaries are usually a result of spending time with Damon. While she does have her own sense of humor, Bonnie is at her most humorous when she's playing off of her best friend.

Lorenzo St. John

Enzo smiling down at someone.

When Enzo was first introduced, he shared several similarities to Klaus. British accent aside, he was cynical, sassy, and had a soft spot for Caroline. In fact, Enzo even compared himself to the original hybrid when he told Caroline he was her type.

However, his sense of humor declined over time, which is what puts him so low on the list. Enzo begins to take life much more seriously after he falls in love with Bonnie, and he turns into a hopeless romantic. It can be disappointing when a character loses their comedic edge, but in this case, it was a sign of Enzo's maturity and exemplified how sincere his feelings were for Bonnie.

Stefan Salvatore

Stefan Salvatore trapped in The Vampire Diaries

It took a few seasons for Stefan to come out of his shell, but his dry sense of humor came as a pleasant surprise. He doesn't go out of his way to crack a joke as Damon does, but that's what sets him apart from his brother.

Stefan becomes a sass master, and it's a hilarious juxtaposition to who he was when the show first started. Emotionless Stefan would be even higher on this list because he lacks a filter. Without his humanity, Stefan is so straightforward that he says exactly what viewers are thinking.

Jenna Sommers

Jenna Sommers looking onward in The Vampire Diaries.

Jenna being sacrificed during Klaus's ritual was one of several plot twists nobody saw coming in The Vampire Diaries. Because she was killed so early on, it's easy to forget that there was much more to her character than being Jeremy and Elena's guardian.

Jenna had a unique personality, and she refused to let anyone take advantage of her. She disliked Damon for several reasons, and the insults she threw his way were as hilarious as they were deserved. Jenna brought a positive energy to the show, which she took with her when she died.

Silas

Silas complains to a couple at the bus station in The Vampire Diaries.

There are several memorable villains in The Vampire Diaries that are more likable than the heroes. The characters made a lot of assumptions about Silas, but no one expected him to be a king of comedy. Paul Wesley did an incredible job differentiating Silas from his other roles.

Unlike Stefan, Silas was carefree and upbeat. He even stood apart from emotionless Stefan and had the animation that a humanity-free vampire lacked. Due to his arrogance and complete disregard for most things, Silas delivers some of the best one-liners in the series.

Caroline Forbes

Caroline making a funny face in The Vampire Diaries.

Caroline's ability to walk through hell and still make the journey into a positive experience is admirable. She refuses to let anyone stop her from living her life, and she's single-handedly the reason why the characters retained a sense of normalcy.

Things like cheerleading and school dances were reminders of a life outside of supernatural threats, and Caroline took her extracurriculars seriously. Her quirky personality lightens up every scene she's in, and her energy level is always three times as high as everyone else's. Caroline even leaves the oldest and evilest vampire in history helpless to control his laughter.

Klaus Mikaelson

Klaus gives Caroline puppy eyes in The Vampire Diaries.

In a show where all the main characters struggle to control the animalistic nature that comes with vampirism, it's hilarious to see a vampire who just doesn't care. Klaus Mikaelson does have significant development in The Originals, but his nonchalant attitude in the parent series provided a different form of entertainment.

Klaus is the sassiest character in the series, and he's somehow far too casual and over-the-top at the same time. He daggers his siblings when he gets sick of them, and throws extravagant dinner parties when he wants to make up. Klaus's love/hate relationship with Stefan is one of the best running jokes in The Vampire Diaries, as the two tend to bicker like an old married couple.

Kai Parker

Kai looking at Bonnie in The Vampire Diaries.

Kai wasn't in the series for long, but he made such a lasting impression that he was brought back during the final season to appease fans. The character was so popular that Chis Wood even reprised his role and guest-starred in Legacies. When Bonnie and Damon first met Kai in the prison world, he lacked all semblance of feeling.

Although it made him lethal, it also made him ridiculously funny. It didn't seem possible for him to get any better, but easygoing Kai isn't even his best persona. After merging with Luke, he develops his brother's wide range of emotions, none of which he can process. Kai struggled to understand the concept of crying, and felt like an "alien creature excreting fluids."

Katherine Pierce

Katherine showing her tongue to Jeremy in The Vampire Diaries

The only real complaint against Katherine Pierce is her lack of screentime. While she was in a decent amount of episodes, fans wanted her around all the time. Her limited role is understandable, as it was taxing on Nina Dobrev, but it was still disappointing.

Katherine is the only character who remained unpredictable up until her last breath, and she's the funniest female in the cast by far. Human Katherine is especially relatable, and her constant complaining was the most fun aspect of The Vampire Diaries Season 5. Katherine was a mixture of arrogance and power, and she's hilariously cranky after it's all stripped away.

Damon Salvatore

Damon making a funny face in The Vampire Diaries.

As obvious as it may be, Damon earned the number one spot. His sarcasm saved the show from being a dull, over-acted teen drama, and he only got more dynamic as time went on. Several unique personalities entered and exited over the seasons, but Damon consistently carried the humor on his back for eight years.

He has a comedic ripple effect on everyone he comes into contact with too, which includes Elena. She isn't the most vibrant protagonist, yet there are plenty of funny Delena scenes in The Vampire Diaries. Without Damon Salvatore, it's likely the series wouldn't have had anywhere near the same level of success.
