Netflix’s The Umbrella Academy made a lot of changes to the source material, among those a very important detail about Luther and Five. Based on the comic book series of the same name by Gerard Way and Gabriel Bá, The Umbrella Academy debuted on Netflix in February 2019 and was a big hit with viewers – so much that it outperformed Stranger Things season 1.

The Umbrella Academy centers on the dysfunctional family of adopted siblings, the Hargreeves. Them, along with other 36 babies, were born on October 1, 1989, at the same time and to women who didn’t show any signs of pregnancy when the day began. Seven of them were adopted by the mysterious and eccentric billionaire Sir Reginald Hargreeves, and the fate of the rest of the babies is currently unknown. Reginald trained his children when they began to develop unique sets of superpowers and formed the superhero team “the Umbrella Academy”.

Sadly, Reginald wasn’t the best father figure, and the relationship between the siblings was also unstable, and they all parted ways at some point. Following Reginald’s death, the Hargreeves reunited and were forced to work together to stop the apocalypse, which also made them come face to face with some past trauma and their fragile relationship. Though The Umbrella Academy is based on a comic book series, it took a lot of creative liberties and even omitted some big details, among those an important connection between Luther and Five.

Will Luther & Five Be Twins In Netflix’s The Umbrella Academy?

The Umbrella Academy Luther Five twins

The Umbrella Academy didn’t offer any information on the Hargreeves’ backstories – for example, it’s unknown who the baby in the opening scene is. The comic books have also kept the mystery going, but they did share a very important piece of information: Luther and Five are twins. This big reveal comes in the Dallas storyline, and nothing more is said about it, but it could be explored in future stories. This is one of the big details that the Netflix series decided to ignore – at least for now.

A reason for omitting Luther and Five’s relationship hasn’t been given, so there might be hope for it to be included at some point. Although season 1 of The Umbrella Academy included parts from the Dallas storyline, season 2 could still use it and take ideas from it, including Luther and Five being twins. Luther plays the role of leader of the group, and as such he’s not exactly a favorite among his siblings (except Allison), but the reveal of him and Five being twins could give their relationship a big twist. This would be especially interesting to watch as these two seem to have nothing in common, but could join forces to truly stop the apocalypse if The Umbrella Academy season 2 follows that path.
