WARNING! This article contains spoilers for The Umbrella Academy season 3.

Season 3 of The Umbrella Academy was released on Netflix on June 22, 2022. Long awaited since the cliffhanger of season 2, when the beloved (and traumatized) protagonists met their replacements, season 3 set fans up for a whirlwind of a new adventure. Seeing Ben - alive - was a welcome shock to fans, and seeing the undoubtedly powerful Sparrows made it clear that the Umbrellas were up against a force that they were ill-prepared for; which is surprising, since they've saved the world from ending twice.

However, it's not just the Sparrows that are new to the story. There are unexpected twists and turns manifested into characters that create even more complications for the Umbrellas. Of course, not every complication is a bad one. Fans are bound to get attached to some of them, and wish for others to have their comeuppance sooner.

Reginald

Reginald Hargreeves in the Umbrella Academy

This timeline displays a version of Reginald never seen before. This Reginald is softer to Klaus and the rest of the family, attempting to curate a relationship with his children.

However, true to Reginald's core, he has a hidden agenda. He helps Klaus to use him as a gateway to get close to the others. He infiltrates Luther's wedding to win them over, just so they can complete another mission. He kills Luther in order to emotionally manipulate the team into doing his bidding. There is no crueler father than Reginald - he sees his children not as family members but simply a means to an end.

Alphonso

Alphonso is Number 4 of the Sparrows and his power is impressive. He has the power of "Empathetic Masochism," in which any damage done towards him is inflicted onto the one perpetrating the attack.

However, Alphonso proves to be one of the most unlikable members of the Sparrows. Both he and Jayme did several things that go past the norm of entitlement that the Sparrows carry. After beating up some racist patrons at a pizza parlor, they took a pizza box without paying for it. At first glance, this may be seen as a generous gesture by the shop's owners, however it is later revealed that both he and Jayme are crueler than they seem.

Jayme

Jayme in The Umbrella Academy promo

Jayme is Number 6 of the Sparrows. Spitting may be considered rude, but Jayme takes it to an entirely different level; she has hallucinogenic spit.

Jayme has a strong amount of resilience; in a fight against Ben, she manages to turn the tide when it seems all hope is lost. However, despite her more admirable traits, her morals are questionable. She is seen at the store with Alphonso, consuming unpaid merchandise and intimidating the store owners. In addition, Alphonso and Jayme are cruel to their father, Reginald, when distributing pills as well as getting his signature for their own benefit.

Ben

Justin H Min as Ben in The Umbrella Academy season 3

This Ben is different from the Ben viewers, and the main characters, know. Number 2 of the Sparrows, he is deeply self-absorbed and hell-bent on grabbing power when the opportunity arises.

There is more to him, though. His self worth relied on the Sparrows' image; later, he grasped for any sort of companionship he could get. At Luther's wedding, he was a lot more open to the Umbrella family. Still, the new Ben is sadistic and wholly unlikable. He stayed out of the fight against the Guardian until the last second, watching his teammates work hard. Also, he choked out his teammate with a smile on his face, eager to impress. Ben has some potential for growth in future seasons, but he's still obnoxious.

Christopher

Umbrella Academy Sparrow Christopher cube

Christopher is Number 7 of the Sparrows. He's a floating cube who can shoot energy beams and no one can understand him other than the rest of the Sparrows.

Despite his strange dialect, it doesn't change the fact that he has a mean streak. In some scenes after he talks, his team laughs, indicating that he's said something snarky about his enemies. He also switches up who he's loyal to; despite being on good terms with Ben, he is quick to abandon him when their ideals differ. He's not the biggest jerk, but he also doesn't have a lot of redeeming features either.

Harlan

Harlan in The Umbrella Academy

Harlan is a more fully-fleshed-out character in this season as fans get to see him as an adult. On the Autistic spectrum and struggling with powers, he lived a life of constantly being bullied and fighting to keep control. When his mother dies, he accidentally kills the Umbrellas' parents.

Harlan is a tragic character. He doesn't seem to harbor much hatred towards Viktor for the trouble he's gone through but seems to understand Viktor's intentions. Harlan is determined to help Viktor, but unfortunately being a victim of circumstance, is killed by an enraged and unapologetic Allison. There isn't anything unlikable about Harlan, and his death is mourned by Viktor and fans alike.

Fei

As Number 3, Fei's next to Ben and naturally follows suit at first, being loyal to him when he attempts to prove himself as the new Number 1. She has the power to release black birds from her body, using them as her eyes when she has none.

She's ruthless, but not unnecessarily so. She acts as a good team member, but also has a mind of her own and can make her own decisions for herself. Viewers do see a softer side of her when she interacts with her sister Sloane, as they share a wall and she hears Sloane and Luther's interactions without interrupting them - almost seemingly giving them her approval before telling Luther that Ben would like to speak with him.

Marcus

Marcus touches the Kugelblitz in The Umbrella Academy season 3

Marcus is Number 1 of the Sparrows, and fittingly so. His powers mimic those of Luther's, but he's leaner and seems to have a clearer loyalty of the team as opposed to his Umbrella counterpart.

He has strong leadership skills. When Ben argues to find the Umbrellas to battle them again for honor, Marcus focuses on improving the team and striking a conversation on how quickly they were defeated. He then takes the time to talk with Viktor, assuming that he's the Number 1 before understanding the brevity of what would happen if he didn't comply with Viktor's demands for the briefcase. Marcus' priority is keeping the image - and power - of the Sparrows intact. His personality doesn't exude entitlement, he knows that his team's status comes from strong maintenance.

Mr. Rodo

The Umbrellas outside the Hotel Obsidian

Mr. Rodo is a less considered character of the new season, but he's definitely a character to be considered. He's the receptionist for the Hotel Obsidian, and from the get-go, he seems to tolerate the team, much to their advantage.

Mr. Rodo's simplicity is admirable. He's quick to pull out the hotel's basic requirement of cash up front, but aside from that he keeps discretion for all patrons. When Viktor is seen by him perusing books and looking at his past lover, Mr. Rodo states that they "accept all kinds." He also witnesses Diego and Stanley attempting to sneak out a deceased Klaus, and lets it go. Mr. Rodo is incredibly enabling, but he's got a certain charm and humor to him that deserves recognition.

Stanley

Javon Walton as Stan in The Umbrella Academy

Stan wins the hearts of the audience with his chaotic yet somewhat innocent behavior. He embarks with Lila on an adventure to give her ex Diego some torture while his actual mother is somewhere with a bassist.

Due to his mother's inconsiderate nature, Stan latches on to the idea of an escape with Lila. The prospect of an actual father figure, Diego, seems to entice Stan. Multiple times, Stan attempts to impress Diego on multiple occasions. Most importantly, he brings out the best of Diego as a fatherly figure, and Lila sees it. Undoubtedly, Stan appreciated having Diego for as long as he did.

Sloane

Sloane is Number 5 of the Sparrows and without a doubt the kindest of them all. She immediately becomes attracted to Luther, despite the initial impression of him being the enemy, and the audience latches onto her as the soft spot of the team.

However, her softness doesn't mean that she lacks strength. With the power to manipulate gravity, her power isn't one to underestimate. In addition to her physical strength, she's also strong in patience. She does her best to convince Luther to be more understanding to her father and gives Ben a strong perspective on who the Sparrows were. When she comes face to face with the Guardian, she's the first to bravely charge forward. She's fearless, strong, loving, and wise. There's very little not to love about her.
