On July 31, Netflix released the anticipated second season of The Umbrella Academy. Drawing inspiration from the original comics, especially Dallas, the second season follows the Hargreeves trying to navigate their lives in the 1960s after being scattered there by Five’s time jump in the season one finale. The Umbrella Academy must unite again to stop an impending doomsday.

A Light Supper - Episode 6 (8.7)

Allison’s life before the events of the season, including the recovery of her throat, is shown in a backstory sequence. The Handler proposes that Five kills the Commission’s Board of Directors in exchange for a ticket back to 2019. Klaus tells Destiny’s Children that he’s a fraud, but they still take his word as scripture. This angers Ben and he runs at Klaus, briefly casting himself into his brother’s body.

Dave arrives at Klaus’s mansion to apologize for hitting him, and Klaus learns that Dave has already enlisted for the military. Allison proves the existence of her powers to Ray. The Hargreeves meet Reginald for dinner and explain their connection to him. Vanya and Sissy plan to run off together.

Ben possesses Klaus so he can talk to Jill, but they are interrupted when Diego comes to get Klaus so they can return to 2019.

Lila is promoted to Head of Security at the Commission and abducts Diego while he’s burying Elliott’s body. Meanwhile, Vanya and Sissy are stopped by state troopers, and the Swedes invade Allison’s and Ray’s house while they’re saying their goodbyes. The family doesn’t reunite within the 90-minute time limit and must find another way home.

The Seven Stages - Episode 8 (8.9)

Vanya is taken to the FBI for being a suspected Russian spy. The last living Swedish assassin realizes that the mission to kill Diego was a set-up. Diego begins training at the Commission, where he commandeers the infinite switchboard and sees the cause of the upcoming nuclear war. Grace finds Reginald’s hidden files about the president and leaves him when he won’t explain.

Five’s last resort to get everyone back home is to find and reason with his older self. The FBI tortures Vanya and gives her LSD, which begins sparking her memory and connection with Harlan. Diego and Herb jump to retrieve Allison and Klaus. When they arrive at the FBI building, Vanya’s powers have become supercharged, exuding a powerful force and killing the agents.

743 - Episode 9 (9.1)

The energy from Vanya’s powers is too strong for Allison, Klaus, and Diego to get to her, but Ben is able to enter Vanya’s mind. He sacrifices himself so she can wake up safely without starting doomsday. Five is suffering from Paradox Psychosis, and older Five is planning to kill him to correct the mistake in his calculations. The Fives and Luther arrive at the grassy knoll.

Carl tries taking Harlan to an institution but is killed when a bullet deflects off Harlan. A.J. discreetly tells Herb to look at case 743, which reveals that Five killed Lila’s parents. Old Five jumps back to 2019, but the briefcase is destroyed. Diego tackles a decoy of his father (who is an alien, by the way) at Kennedy’s assassination, failing to save the President. Meanwhile, an anomaly at Sissy’s barn sets off Commission alarms.

The End of Something - Episode 10 (9.2)

The Hargreeves are now FBI persons of interest. Vanya goes back to the farm to help Harlan and her siblings tag along. Harlan is surrounded by an energy force — a product of Vanya saving his life earlier in the season. The Handler and Lila arrive at Sissy’s to collect Harlan and kill Five. The Handler summons an army of Commission agents, and Vanya uses her powers to kill them all. The siblings go head-to-head with Lila, who can mirror their powers against them.

When Lila learns that she is one of the 43 children, the Handler shoots everyone in proximity. Five uses his power to go back a few seconds, and the last Swede kills the Handler before she can do any more harm. Lila zaps away, Vanya saves Harlan, and the family travels back to 2019. Back in the normal timeline (or so fans thought), Reginald and Ben are alive, but The Sparrow Academy has replaced The Umbrella Academy.
