One of the new trailers that will premiere in front of Inception this weekend in that for the film The Town, a cops & robbers drama/thriller set in Boston and directed (appropriately) by none other than actor Ben Affleck.
The Town is based off Chuck Hogan's novel The Prince of Thieves and revolves around Doug MacRay (Affleck), the leader of a successful gang of bank robbers working the Boston area. Complications arise when Doug becomes romantically involved with bank manager Claire Keesey (Rebecca Hall) - the woman he and his crew held hostage on a recent job - and begins to question his life.
Affleck previously helmed the well-regarded film Gone Baby Gone, which itself was a Boston-set crime drama based off a novel. The Good Will Hunting writer/star selected to remain behind the camera in his directorial debut, but will attempt to tackle additional leading man duties here.
He will be supported by a solid cast that includes Hall (The Prestige); Jon Hamm (Mad Men) as an FBI agent agent determined to take Doug and his cronies down; Jeremy Renner (The Hurt Locker) as Jem, a member of Doug's posse; Chris Cooper (The Bourne Identity) as Doug's prison convict father; and an almost unrecognizable Blake Lively (Gossip Girl) as Krista (see below), a girl that shares an intimate history with Doug.
The trailer for The Town makes it look like a fairly intense if by-the-numbers "criminal struggles to begin a new life" action drama - even with the presence of robbers dressed in rubber nun masks. Affleck demonstrated with Gone Baby Gone that he could deliver an intelligent crime genre film that felt relatively fresh and he will hopefully repeat the act here as well.
