The countdown continues to Ben Affleck’s next directorial effort, The Town, a cops and robbers drama due to arrive in theaters this September.
An international trailer for the feature has been released along with some new footage from the violent crime thriller. Yahoo! Movies has also posted a clip from the The Town, which is an adaptation of the novel Prince of Thieves by Chuck Hogan.
The film stars Affleck in the role of Doug MacRay, the leader of an accomplished group of bank robbers operating out of Charlestown – a Boston neighborhood lovingly referred to as “the bank robbery capital of the world” by some. Trouble presents itself in the form of Claire (Rebecca Hall), a woman taken hostage by MacRay and his men during their most recent job.
Doug and his fellow thieves – one of whom is played by Jeremy Renner (The Avenger‘s Hawkeye) – discover soon thereafter that Claire lives dangerously close to their home turf. Concerned that Claire may be “not scared enough” to keep quiet about the group, Doug agrees to track her down himself.

The situation becomes all the more complicated when Doug finds himself falling in love with Claire and wanting to abandon his life of crime. With an F.B.I. agent (Jon Hamm, fresh off his dance lesson with Betty White at the 2010 Emmys) hot on his trail and a local crime boss (Pete Postlethwaite) unwilling to let Doug walk away from his criminal career, that act is easier said than done.
Recent TV spots for The Town have promoted it as being “[from] the studio that brought you The Departed” and have focused primarily on the action-packed portions of the film – the new international trailer is no exception and contains a plethora of gun fire, car crashes, and exploding vans.

Affleck surprised most moviegoers with his directorial debut, Gone Baby Gone, and looks to deliver another engaging crime flick with The Town. Awards season is just around the corner and Affleck may earn the kind of recognition for his new film that has eluded him since he won an Oscar (yes, that did happen) for co-writing the Good Will Hunting screenplay back in 1997.
The Town will be released in theaters in the U.S. on September 17th, 2010.
