Warning: this article contains spoilers for season 1 of The Summer I Turned Pretty.

There are many serious moments in Amazon Prime Video's TV adaptation of the Jenny Han YA series The Summer I Turned Pretty. Belly worries about the love triangle that she has become part of, Conrad and Jeremiah's mom Susannah has cancer, and Laurel is still reeling from her divorce.

The popular series, which has been renewed for season 2, has many hilarious scenes and quotes as well. The main characters have known each other for so long that they often joke around and tease each other, but no matter what, they're always there when the going gets tough.

Belly Has Liked Conrad For Years

"I could survive for months, years, on a crush.”

There are many likable The Summer I Turned Pretty characters, and the love triangle between Conrad, Belly and Jeremiah heats up before season 1 is over. When the series opens, Belly admits that she has had a crush on Conrad since they were younger.

Belly's statement that a crush could help her get through hard times and the rest of the year when she wasn't at the beach in Cousins is sweet and funny. Belly knows that she can be a bit intense and overly dramatic, but when it comes to Conrad, she can't help it. Conrad makes Belly feel like she's the star of her very own movie and like something big could happen at any time.

Belly Jokes About Her Debutante Ball Performance

"That would be bad. I'm supposed to be dancing all night."

Conrad and Belly have many cute moments in season 1 and since Conrad likes Belly but is afraid to admit it, he often makes awkward comments while staring at her with a vulnerable look in his eyes. When Conrad tells Belly to break a leg at the debutante ball, she jokes that it would be a terrible idea.

This scene might be small, but it's significant as it shows that instead of Belly feeling nervous, insecure and confused, Conrad is the one who is at a loss for words. Belly is torn between wanting to tell Conrad that she's upset that he's been so miserable all summer and that she wishes they could have a real conversation and wanting to have a fun evening.

Nicole Is Thrilled Jeremiah Is Going To Practice Dancing With Belly

"Yes, actually, she's all yours."

While Nicole is upset with Belly at first because Nicole is dating Conrad and knows how Belly feels, the two do become friends, and their relationship is a moving part of the series. In a light-hearted scene, Nicole teaches Belly how to dance and when Jeremiah asks to step in, Nicole is more than happy because Belly isn't very good yet.

While several parts of the show are sad and upsetting, especially Susannah's cancer struggles, watching Belly prepare for the debutante ball is fun as she loves shopping for outfits, participating in a charity volleyball tournament, and daydreaming about the event. Belly is an interesting character since she's both wise and innocent, and the fact that she gets giddy about learning how to dance is a reminder of her youth and coming-of-age story.

Laurel Talks To Susannah About John's New Girlfriend Victoria

"I was kind of hoping for a vapid ditz in Lululemons."

The best The Summer I Turned Pretty characters include Laurel and Susannah, whose friendship has been strong and ironclad for decades and who are just as likely to laugh and joke around as they are to give each other advice about the tough parts of life.

When Laurel's ex-husband and Steven and Belly's dad arrives for the Fourth of July, he brings his new girlfriend along. Laurel makes a hilarious joke about what she thought Victoria would be like, admitting that she wanted to dislike her on principle. The fact that Laurel and Susannah can laugh about a life change that is actually upsetting is a good sign as it shows that they have a strong bond and that Laurel is trying to move on.

Jeremiah Has A Nickname For Cam

"So Cam. You mind if I call you Cam Cameron?"

Although Belly and Cam don't appreciate that Jeremiah names him "Cam Cameron," it's funny hearing Jeremiah give Belly's summer love interest a name. It adds silliness to some tense scenes, as Conrad and Jeremiah are both jealous.

Cam probably doesn't love the nickname but shows that he has a good sense of humor and wants to be friendly, easy-going, and part of the group. Jeremiah loves kidding around and can't help himself.

Steven, Conrad And Jeremiah Tease Belly

"I think it's time for a belly flop!"

When Belly gets to the Cousins beach house in the first episode, Conrad and Jeremiah are thrilled to see her, and Steven suggests a "belly flop," which means tossing Belly into the pool.

Although Belly is tired of being treated like a child, this is a heartfelt moment that shows that Steven, Conrad and Jeremiah care about her and love continuing the traditions that they have enjoyed for several years.

Belly Laughs That Jeremiah And Conrad Say No To Escorting Her To The Debutante Ball

"Stop fighting over me."

Questions after The Summer I Turned Pretty's first season revolve around Belly and Conrad's kiss in the finale and what happens now that she also has feelings for Jeremiah. In episode 2 "Summer Dress," Susannah asks which of her sons will be Belly's escort to the ball and when they each say that they have something else to do, Belly jokes that they're arguing.

Even though Belly is confused about her romantic life, she maintains her sense of humor, and it's nice that she can joke around instead of taking Conrad and Jeremiah seriously. She knows that they don't mean anything by this.

Steven Teases Belly On Her Date With Cam

"Just catching the end of our favorite movie."

In episode 2, Cam and Belly go on a date to a drive-in movie, which is just as awkward as Belly thinks that it's going to be. Belly is different from her best friend Taylor, who embraces dating and has a lot of fun meeting new people. This makes Belly an incredibly relatable character as everyone remembers their first nerve-wracking date.

Steven, Conrad and Jeremiah drive up in a car next to Cam and Belly and Steven jokes about watching his favorite film. While Belly doesn't appreciate the teasing, it's a funny moment that breaks the tension. It also proves that Conrad is never far away, even when Belly tells herself that she can ignore her feelings for him and explore a relationship with someone else.

Laurel Jokes About Cleveland

"Cleveland Castillo is such a phony name. It's like 'Hi I'm masculine, but I'm intellectual.' I bet Hemingway is his hero. I bet he wears horn-rim glasses. Yeah. see."

Romantic comedies and sitcoms often use the trope of a character talking about someone behind their back and then the person who they're speaking about pops up, which is embarrassing and awkward. While this doesn't always work, it's hilarious when Laurel jokes about Cleveland with Susannah at the local bookstore and there Cleveland is, having heard every single word.

Cleveland is an excellent The Summer I Turned Pretty character as he's a sweet, smart and perfect love interest for Laurel and also helps Conrad through a sad summer of concern for Susannah. Cleveland takes Laurel's correct interpretation of him in stride and smiles, which makes her realize that he's more interesting than she thought.

Susannah Makes A Request For A Nice Dinner

"Can dinner be a screen-free zone? You know, like the olden days?"

Susannah in The Summer I Turned Pretty

Susannah's comment that she would love to share a meal with her family without any phones is both moving and hilarious. Instead of simply saying that she wants people to pay attention to each other and have real conversations, she jokes about "the olden days," getting smiles out of the others.

Susannah has the best sense of humor on the show thanks to the wisdom that she has gained over the years. While her sons are caught up in dating and friendship drama, and Steven and Belly are also upset about many big and small topics over the summer, Susannah knows that her time is short and that she has to joke around and enjoy every moment.
