The Suicide Squad wrapped principal photography, and director James Gunn took to Instagram to celebrate. The Suicide Squad serves as a sequel to Suicide Squad, which was released in 2016, and is expected to be a continuation of the DCEU narrative. Margot Robbie is back for more action as Harley Quinn, and other returning cast members include Joel Kinnaman as Rick Flag and Viola Davis as Amanda Waller. Idris Elba and John Cena are just some of the many new additions to the franchise.

James Gunn replaced director David Ayer, who, despite his frustrating experience with the first film, has voiced his utter confidence in Gunn as the new captain of the ship. After being fired from directing Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 by Marvel for some inappropriate tweets he made years ago, Gunn took on the DC movie as his next project. Since then, Marvel rehired Gunn to write and direct the third Guardians, but he isn't set to start until after finishing The Suicide Squad.

James Gunn took to his Instagram to announce the end of filming on The Suicide Squad. He posted an image showing The Suicide Squad logo above a photo of the full cast and crew. In his post, Gunn referenced the deaths of both his father and dog, which happened during filming. He also noted the "professionalism, talent, compassion, and kindness" of his crew, saying, "you are why I make movies."

James Gunn has always had a good track record with his casts and crew. This proved especially true last year when his involvement in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 seemed to be over. Cast members, such as Chris Pratt and Dave Bautista, were vocal in their support for the filmmaker. They repeatedly called for Gunn to be put back on the project, with Bautista even threatening to quit.

Suicide Squad left a bad taste in audiences' mouths after its release. David Ayer and Jared Leto certainly didn't help the matter as they spoke out against the creative restrictions Warner Bros. put on them. It'll be interesting to see how a director like Gunn, who brings such a different perspective to his films, rewrites the public's opinion of this franchise. All signs point to a smooth production, and this Instagram post only further supports that. It's still a long wait until fans get to see The Suicide Squad, which won't hit theaters until August 6, 2021.
