The Suicide Squad could end up with an R rating, says director James Gunn. The premiere of the highly anticipated follow up to the critically panned Suicide Squad has been one of the few films that hasn't been delayed due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. However, Gunn has been saying for a while that he knows how the film will be rated.

Fans were excited when Gunn was revealed as the director for the reboot/sequel of the Suicide Squad. While The Suicide Squad will introduce a few new characters, there will be some fan favorites returning from David Ayer's 2016 movie. Those characters include Harley Quinn (Margot Robbie), Amanda Waller (Viola Davis), Captain Boomerang (Jai Courtney), and Rick Flag (Joe Kinnaman.) Idris Elba will be joining the cast as well, although his character remains a mystery. Plot details regarding the new movie are still scarce, but Gunn has promised a high body count.

Gunn has been quite active on social media, participating in Q&As with fans to keep them entertained while in quarantine. He responded to a fan on his Instagram page who inquired about The Suicide Squad's rating. Rather than relay information about the rating, Gunn remained coy. Check out his response below:

Although the first Suicide Squad had its issues, the movie did present a lot of potential as well. The bombastic Harley Quinn (who was already a fan-favorite comic book character) quickly became a fan favorite on-screen as well. Not only that, but she appeared in her own stand-alone film, Birds of Prey (And The Fantabulous Emancipation of Harley Quinn)Director David Ayer defended his work on the first film, but also noted he turned down directing the semi-sequel. However, The Suicide Squad is in capable hands with James Gunn, who is most well known for directing another successful movie about lesser-known heroes: Guardians of the Galaxy. In terms of directorial choices, there really couldn't have been a better pick than Gunn.

Although the rating for The Suicide Squad is still unknown, that hasn't lessened fan anticipation for the film in the slightest. 2021 looks to be a blockbuster year for movies in general, due to many highly anticipated 2020 films being delayed due to the coronavirus. Gunn has repeated time and time that there are no plans to postpone The Suicide Squad's release date of August 6, 2021. While it may be frustrating to wait another year to see Gunn's first foray into the DCEU universe, more than likely, the final product will be worth the agonizing wait, regardless of the rating.
