It has been a long road to get here, but a trailer has finally arrived for the long awaited The Strangers sequel, aka The Strangers: Prey at Night.

Set for release in March next year and a mere decade after director Bryan Bertino gave us the first film, The Strangers sequel is finally one step closer. With a whole new cast and a crew, 47 Meters Down director Johannes Roberts will pit the likes of Mad Men's Christina Hendricks against the same trio of terrifying attackers in The Strangers followup.

While short, the Prey at Night trailer is packed with the same hunting horror that Bertino's original film was all those years ago. Set to Tiffany's cover of "I Think We're Alone Now", masked menaces Dollface, Pin-Up Girl, and The Man in the Mask are back to put the frighteners up more victims at an isolated mobile home park. With a larger cast this time around, expect the body count to rise as the sadistic maniacs stalk a new bunch of innocent bystanders.

The unique selling point of The Strangers was that audiences still knew nothing about the attackers by the time the credits rolled. The original introduced us to the Michael Myers-esque group who barely said a word through the movie's runtime, so it is no surprise that Roberts has cited the likes of John Carpenter as an influence for the sequel. Hopefully, he will manage to keep the mystery and the masks on in Prey at Night.

Starring Liv Tyler and Scott Speedman, Bertino's original film became a cult hit with its bold reinvention of the home invasion genre. Tyler was originally set to return as sole-survivor Kristen, but the various changes of director and delays with the sequel forced her to drop out. However, it looks like a safe bet that Hendricks' star factor will put her as the leading lady this time around. Audiences will have to wait and see whether Prey at Night will address Tyler's absence and carry on from where the trio of tormenters left us last time, or completely start afresh.

The Strangers earned an impressive $82 million on just a $9 million budget, but who knows how the sequel will do. Released on the exact 10-year anniversary of the original film, Prey at Night has some stiff competition considering how much the landscape of horror has changed of late. In recent memory alone, movies like Hush, You're Next, and The Invitation have all put their own twist on the home invasion genre - can The Strangers franchise keep up with the times?

As a reboot of sorts, Prey at Night could be just what is needed to kickstart a The Strangers franchise and an inevitable run of more sequels. Here's to hoping it doesn't take another ten years for The Strangers 3 to come to fruition, should that happen.
