The Silver Angel was arguably The Strain's most likable hero. Guillermo del Toro has a very well-documented love for monsters, as seen in Hellboy and The Shape Of Water. He's also got a long history with vampires, with his 1993 directorial debut being Cronos, which was a unique take on the myth. His first big-budget gig was 2002's Blade II, which pit Wesley Snipes' titular hunter against an army of Reapers, which were horrifically mutated and almost unkillable vampires.

Guillermo del Toro and writer Chuck Hogan teamed for a trilogy of vampires books called The Strain, which originated as a TV series concept. The Strain dealt with a vampire outbreak in New York, with each novel increasingly the apocalyptic stakes for the heroes. The TV adaptation retained key beats from the books but often took its own path regarding the fates of key characters or storylines. While it received mixed reviews during its four-season run, it was an enjoyable horror series.

One key issue critics and viewers had with The Strain was the main characters themselves, since many of them could be unlikable d***s. While there's nothing wrong with shows that have heroes who are flawed or even unsympathetic, The Strain's protagonists could be hard to root for. Corey Stoll's (Ant-Man) Eph was introduced as an arrogant douche but while he matured somewhat over time, this first impression was hard to shake - as was they hideously unconvincing wig. Likewise, strigoi slayer Gus could be extremely obnoxious while Eph's young son Zach was also widely despised by viewers, making his eventual switch to villain logical.

That's not to say The Strain didn't feature some great heroes though, with Fet, Setrakian, and Quinlan all awesome in their own ways. Arguably the most likable of the bunch would be Angel Guzman - AKA The Silver Angel. In the past, Guzman was a Mexican wrestler who starred in a series of popular movies as The Silver Angel, who fought vampires with his silver crosses. By the time of the vampire outbreak, he's long retired and working in a restaurant, where Gus recognizes him from his movies and later recruits him to join the fight.

Despite being a supporting player, The Silver Angel's backstory and actor Joaquín Cosio's (Narcos) endearing performance made him one of the best characters on The Strain. His sense of honor and willingness to fight despite being a rundown ex-wrestler with a limp put him miles ahead of the whiny likes of Eph. He even got one of the show's best deaths and it's only a shame the series didn't give him a little more to do.
