As filmmaking grows more and more advanced with technology, the possibilities for movies are becoming endless. The sci-fi genre, in particular, is in its heyday, as special effects allow actors to traverse the universe and battle monsters of all kinds. Sci-fi is even starting to see its own sub-genres develop, perhaps one of the most unexpected of which is the romance sub-category.

If any fans of the genre were worried that last month's ill-received Passengers had soiled everything, they need not fear - plenty of new movies are now rushing to replace it. One in particular, The Space Between Us, is hopeful to excite teen viewers. It follows the Mars-bound adolescent, Gardner, who traverses the universe, despite biological difficulty, to meet Tulsa, an Earth girl he meets online. Once together, she teaches him the wonders of her world, but the lovebirds are interrupted when Gardner's body begins to fail under the biological differences between Earth and Mars's atmospheres.

STX Entertainment has just released their third official trailer for the film (see above), which includes several new glimpses into Tulsa and Gardner's road trip.

The Space Between Us - Asa Butterfield and Britt Robertson

The romantic rendezvous stars Asa Butterfield (Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children) as Gardner and Britt Robertson (Tomorrowland) as Tulsa, with direction by Peter Chelsom (Hector and the Search for Happiness) and a screenplay by Allan Loeb, who co-penned heist drama hit 21. The movie hopes to win audiences over where others of its ilk have not. Originally slated to premiere in mid-December, it was pushed to early February of this year, likely to avoid heavy competition from similar films.

While it likely won't wow audiences looking for a hard-hitting scientific exploration, (à la Interstellar), The Space Between Us seems aimed to provide viewers with a case of the warm fuzzies. It's also nice to see an original idea make it to the big screen in this age of adaptations, franchises, and sequels. That said, all three Space trailers haven't given a great deal of variety in showing what substance the film has to offer, outside of its dramatic love story.

No matter what, it will be interesting to see what The Space Between Us really has to offer, especially since its young stars have yet to really have career-making roles. With any luck, it won't be delayed again.
