The release date of Florian Zeller's The Son, the much-anticipated followup to the director's exceptional 2021 film The Father, is just around the corner. A celebrated playwright, Zeller has adapted The Son into a film from one of his plays; an exciting prospect, as The Father also began as a stage play. Featuring an all-star cast that includes Hugh Jackman, Laura Dern, Anthony Hopkins, and Vanessa Kirby, The Son looks set to dive deep into the nuances of mental health and family relationships in a dramatic and gripping fashion.

Just as The Son has attracted top-tier acting talent, it has done the same with music; the movie's score was written by German film composer Hans Zimmer. Perhaps second in name recognition only to the zeitgeist-defining John Williams, Zimmer has scored some of the best-known films of all time including The Dark Knight trilogy, Gladiator, and The Lion King (1994 and 2019). Hans Zimmer also recently won an Academy Award thanks to his outstanding score for 2021's Dune. Screen Rant is excited to premiere a key piece from the original soundtrack for The Son, titled "Love Is Not Enough", below.

"Love Is Not Enough" is a rich and dramatic track that fits the emotional nature of the film itself. The evocative string melodies, swelling pulse, and wandering chord progression of the piece come together to expertly craft something as beautiful as it is somber. "Love Is Not Enough" is also a wonderful example of Hans Zimmer's wide range, as much of the composer's best-known work is bigger and more bombastic than this track from The Son. On working on The Son, Hans Zimmer had the following to say:

“I had always wanted to work with Florian having been so moved by ‘The Father.’ This film is so rich in its depiction of the struggle to maintain one’s mental health and the wide swathe of emotions displayed by all of the connected characters, I found it remarkably moving to be able to enhance and frame those emotions as empathetically as I could with the orchestra.”

Below is the track list for The Son: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack.

Although relatively short when compared to many other film score soundtracks, if "Love Is Not Enough" is any indication, The Son: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack will be a beautiful and at times heartbreaking collection of music. As The Son: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack also releases a week before The Son itself, it's also a good way to prepare to see the film.
