Some movies are filled with Easter eggs buried for eagle-eyed fans to spot. Last night, I noticed one fantastic Easter Egg in The Social Network: director David Fincher found a way to sneak Tyler Durden of Fight Club into the film.
In a brief scene where Mark Zuckerberg (Jesse Eisenberg) is using Facebook to cheat on an art exam, the student profile he searches for art explanations is Tyler Durden’s. Just keep your eyes peeled and look for his name on the top left of the computer screen during the scene. It is a quick one, so be ready.
I couldn’t find any written proof, but it also looked like the real Sean Parker made a lengthy cameo as an extra. A man who looked extremely similar to Parker was standing in the Facebook recruitment party room later in the film. The man in question is clapping and yelling right next to Justin Timberlake, who portrays Parker in the film.
Easily one of the best films of 2010, The Social Network garnered a solid 4 out of 5 star review from our own Kofi Outlaw. Screenwriter Aaron Sorkin and director David Fincher put endless effort into melding the fictional dialogue with the non-fiction storyline. Their attention to detail was relentless. It’s nice to know they had a little fun, too, burying Easter Eggs like a Tyler Durden Facebook page.
Personally, I think it would have been hilarious to sneak one of Durden’s trademark pornographic frames into the final reel of The Social Network. I won’t get too detailed, but as The Narrator describes Durden’s great talent in Fight Club:
“So when the snooty cat, and the courageous dog, with the celebrity voices meet for the first time in reel three, that’s when you’ll catch a flash of Tyler’s contribution to the film.”
Easter Eggs are always fun to catch without prior knowledge. The last one I remember is Zack Snyder’s nod to his own film, 300, in the opening fight scene of Watchmen when the coffee mug shatters on the apartment room door, revealing only the first three numbers of his room number, 3001.
Ultimately, the Easter Egg in The Social Network is fun, but easy to miss. It’s nothing like Toy Story 3‘s handful of Easter Eggs.
