The Simpsons composer says the show is ending, despite its season 32 renewal. The award-winning animated series has long since earned the title of the longest-running scripted show in history, and fans never seem to tire of the city of Springfield and its inhabitants. Now in its 31st season, The Simpsons have done pretty much everything a show of its magnitude is expected to do, including making the sitcom into a feature length film with The Simpsons Movie. Although the biggest concern right now for many is how Disney will go about fixing the aspect ratio on Disney+ for some of the earlier episodes, or exactly when a sequel to The Simpsons Movie will hit theaters, what really remains uncertain is just how much longer the hit series will continue to run for.

There were initially rumors several years ago The Simpsons would call it quits after its 30th season, but a series finale failed to materialize, and the show has since been renewed for its 31st and 32nd seasons. For fans, the awareness that Homer, Marge, Lisa, Maggie and Bart will be around for yet another season after this one has been very encouraging. Fox is clearly still interested in the animated landmark, and the brilliant cast behind The Simpsons is still interested in doing more. That’s the best anyone can ask for at this point in the program’s record-breaking run.

Unfortunately, in a recent interview with Joe, superstar composer Danny Elfman (whose theme song to The Simpsons has been an instantly recognizable staple of the series since its early days) revealed it was his understanding The Simpsons would end after its 31st season. Though conceding he could be wrong about this, Elfman addressed the question of whether or not it was time to for The Simpsons to call it quits or not by saying, "Well, from what I've heard, it is coming to an end. So, that argument will also come to an end. [...] I don't know for a fact, but I've heard that it will be in its last year."

Whether or not Elfman’s information on this issue is correct has not presently been verified by anyone from The Simpsons camp. It’s difficult to imagine the 31st season will be the last for The Simpsons, particularly since Fox has renewed it for a 32nd. With only nine more episodes left in the 31st, it’s very strange Elfman’s voice would be the only one publicly heard on this issue. Elfman’s sole credits on The Simpsons has always been for the theme song, meaning he likely isn’t around very often when it comes to creating the episodes, nor would he be among the core group of insiders privy to information as to when the series would end.

None of this is to say Elfman is making it all up, but rather his take on The Simpsons’ future doesn’t come off as a particularly reliable one. It is certainly possible the multi Oscar-nominated composer did get some insight at one point or another into the future of the series, but things can and do change very quickly in Hollywood, and what might have been the case at one point isn’t necessarily the case now. Still, for now, nothing concrete is being said about the end of The Simpsons and for fans, this silence is a good thing. The longer nothing official is heard, the longer the series will continue to run for.
