In an interview with MTV News, The Twilight Saga: Eclipse director David Slade took a moment to debunk the persistent rumors that he’s attached to the latest live-action adaptation of pulp hero The Shadow. The project may be moving forward, but Slade confirms that he is not involved:
“It’s funny, particularly with something like ‘Twilight,’ you get all these bizarre rumors that are made up [by] bloggers or whatever … And I don’t know how that one originated, but I can debunk it and say I will not be directing ‘The Shadow’ and I have no idea where it came from.”
The Shadow is being produced by Sam Raimi and Michael E. Uslan and Slade mentions that once he caught wind of the rumor he actually emailed Raimi about possibly taking a look at the script. He never heard back from him.
Uslan addressed the same rumor back in April and urged fans not to believe everything they read on the Internet. At the time, it seemed as though he was still pulling for Raimi himself to helm the The Shadow:
“The Shadow comics were the thing that propelled Sam into becoming a comic book fanatic… Sam has a passion for it and an understanding of it.”
Depending on how quickly they want to move into production, Raimi may not be an option due to his directorial obligations on The Wizard of Oz prequel, Oz, the Great and Powerful. I personally wouldn’t mind waiting until Raimi’s schedule clears, since I think he’s a perfect fit for The Shadow.
The last time The Shadow was on the big screen was in the terrible 1994 version that featured Alec Baldwin in the lead role. Although it borrowed several important elements from the pulp novels, as well as the radio program, I think it failed miserably at achieving the right tone. I would desperately love to see a respectful adaptation of the character because in the right hands this is a property that could have massive appeal.
Were you looking forward to Slade’s take on the character or is this news a relief? With Slade out of the picture and Raimi up in the air, the question remain s- who else is qualified to direct The Shadow?
I’m going to spare you an “only The Shadow knows” joke, even though it’s taking every fiber of my being to restrain myself.
