The Rookie Teaser: Nathan Fillion Is Not Having A Midlife Crisis

ABC has released the first teaser trailer for the upcoming series The Rookie, starring Nathan Fillion as the LAPD’s oldest new recruit. It’s been a minute since Fillion was starring in his own series, after the long-running procedural Castle came to a somewhat abrupt end in the spring of 2016. Since then, Fillion has popped up in number of memorable guest roles, including an extended stint on Modern Family, as well as Netflix’s A Series of Unfortunate Events and as Gary, the zombified, advice-giving head of a formerly repulsive real estate agent, in Santa Clarita Diet. His new series, however, is much more in the vein of his previous ABC show.

The Rookie is a fitting next step for the Castle star, as he finally gets to step into the shoes of an actual cop, instead of playing an obscenely rich author who spends much of his free time playing detective. Details on the series were fairly limited after the pilot was ordered, but when ABC made the series order official not too long ago, the network released the first image of Fillion in his character’s LAPD uniform, and now the first teaser has hit the internet as well.

The teaser does a fine job of establishing the series’ conceit and its tone, showing The Rookie to be more dramatic than Fillion’s more recent efforts. Check out a synopsis below:

“Starting over isn't easy, especially for small-town guy John Nolan who, after a life-altering incident, is pursuing his dream of being an LAPD officer. As the force's oldest rookie, he's met with skepticism from some higher-ups who see him as just a walking midlife crisis. If he can't keep up with the young cops and the criminals, he'll be risking lives including his own. But if he can use his life experience, determination and sense of humor to give him an edge, he may just become a success in this new chapter of his life.”

Fillion will be joined by a few other familiar faces, like Richard T. Jones (Santa Clarita Diet) and Mercedes Mason (Fear the Walking Dead). For the most part, though, all viewers really have to go on is the teaser, which, as mentioned above, delivers what looks to be a surprisingly earnest cop drama that has more in common with the Dennis Quaid baseball movie than just the title they both share. The series is set to be a part of ABC’s fall lineup, so we’ll have to wait until then to find out if this story of a middle-aged man discovering it’s never too late to fulfill his dreams is a winner.
