Slicing its way to the masses on June 10, 2022, the new interactive survival horror game The Quarry follows nine camp counselors who must survive a terrifying night of lycanthropic murder and mayhem at Hackett's Quarry summer camp. With 186 unique endings, the game has nearly endless hours of content for gamers to navigate, allowing them to truly get to know the nine protagonists and discover their most successful playthroughs.

Aside from the distinct personalities that go a long way in relating to and rooting for each character, other factors add to their compelling nature, including their decision-making, potential fates, the actors portraying them, and much more.

Jacob Custos

Jacob wears a backwards cap in The Quarry

A boisterous frat boy type who all but incited the entire murder spree to start the game, Jacob Custos (Zach Tinker) is easily the least likable camp counselor. He's loud, brash, obnoxious, does not listen or heed any advice, and as a result of his ignorance, has at least eight potential deaths in the game.

Prone to being the center of attention as a popular high school jock, Jacob does have a modicum of charm and charisma, especially when interacting with his former fling, Emma. However, his deeply dubious decision-making leads him and his friends into direct peril more than anyone, rendering him responsible for the entire night of horror.

Emma Mountebank

While Emma Mountebank (Halston Sage) scores points for denying Jacob's aggressive advances, she comes off as a bit phony and superficial in the highly-anticipated horror game as someone who puts on a front and performs for social media followers rather than being herself around her friends. An actress and influencer, the name Mountebank refers to her deceptive nature as a charlatan.

Despite her duplicitous nature, Emma's relationship with her best friend Abigail goes a long way in redeeming her likability. When Emma is alone with Abi, she lets her guard down, expresses her true feelings of insecurity, and articulates how much she'll miss Abi when the summer is over.

Nick Furcillo

Nick turns into a werewolf in The Quarry

Balancing a nerdy personality with handsome good looks, Nick Furcillo (Evan Evagora) is awkward, athletic, urbane, and easily influenced. However, his stoicism prevents people from getting close to him, which makes him a bit of an outsider. His sweet relationship with Abigail develops over time, but his lack of direct endangerment decreases the stakes of his character and therefore relegates him to the sidelines.

As the only character who cannot be killed by a werewolf in the game, Nick's impervious nature lessens his overall relatability. Moreover, Nick becomes a werewolf regardless of a player's decisions, which gives him a fixed antagonistic position that is hard to root for as the game advances.

Max Brinly

Max sheds a tear in The Quarry

Despite being the least playable character in the game, Max Brinly (Skyler Gisondo) is kind, gregarious, and extremely loyal but also lazy, unmotivated, and irresponsible, giving him a well-rounded personality that is easy to identify with. Dubbed the class clown of the group, Max's interactions with his girlfriend Laura feel authentic as they balance serious and lighthearted subject matter.

Alas, just like Nick, Max can only die once in the game, which tends to decrease the stakes of the character's fate and sap his overall importance to the various playthroughs. His dockside death is quite harrowing, but by the time it comes in Chapter 10, Max has become a bit of an afterthought.

Dylan Lenivy

Dylan looks through a desk drawer in The Quarry

Due to his offbeat sardonic sense of humor and musical expertise, Dylan Lenivy (Miles Robbins) is a much more enjoyable character to spend time with during the game inspired by great summer camp horror movies. His friendship with Kaitlyn is particularly heartening, especially when he risks his life to save her in the scrapyard.

For the first time in Supermassive Games history, Dylan and Ryan share a same-sex kiss during the narrative, which also goes a long way in rooting for both of their survival. In terms of functionality, Dylan uses his keen radio voice to broadcast over the camp's PA system and give his fellow counselors updates, directions, and vital pieces of intel, the responsibility for which reinforces his genial nature.

Kaitlyn Ka

The affable social butterfly of the group, Kaitlyn Ka (Brenda Song) is comfortable and confident in any situation. She also has a wild mischievous side and an acerbic wit gives her an alpha presence, although she isn't always sure of how to lead her friends. However, as the foremost gun expert in the group, her ability to use firearms is pretty badass.

What really makes players' hearts go out to Kaitlyn is the secret crush she harbors on Ryan, who has his own romantic interest in Dylan. The way Kaitlyn tries to kiss Ryan during the Truth or Dare game is achingly memorable, as is Kaityln's brutal disembowelment in the Lodge, an intense moment that makes the game feel like a real horror movie.

Abigail Blyg

With a timid, artistic sensibility often paralyzed by indecision, Abigail Blyg (Ariel Winter) is the kind of character players want to wrap up, hold tight, and keep safe for as long as possible. She's sweet-natured and socially awkward, and her desire to find a romantic summer fling makes her very easy to care for and hope for her future.

Oddly, when Abigail is bitten by a werewolf, she never experiences symptoms or transforms, which goes a long way in retaining her humanity and ensuring players do not feel threatened by her. However, her grueling decapitation in front of her friends when failing to shoot Nick is such a shockingly brutal death that it's impossible not to sympathize with Abigail.

Ryan Erzhalher

Ryan stands in moonlight in The Quarry

Due to his immense interest in all things paranormal, horror podcast and ghost story enthusiast Ryan Erzhaler (Justice Smith) is the de-facto horror fan in the game through which players can vicariously navigate. Charismatic, curious, and heroic to the core, Ryan's reclusive demeanor is just a front for how truly special he is in the excellent survival horror game.

The surname Erzhaler translates as narrator, alluding to the fact that Ryan serves as the overarching voice of the group. Between his eclectic taste in music, his tender budding romance with Dylan, and devout loyalty to his friend Laura, Ryan is the kind of person everyone would want as a friend.

Laura Kearney

Laura wears a baseball cap in The Quarry

Voiced with credible conviction by Siobhan Williams, Laura Kearney is the most compelling character to identify with and root for in The Quarry. She's supremely smart, inquisitive, self-reliant, and fiercely independent, using her superior wits and wiles to outsmart most of the werewolves (if played properly), giving Travis and Silas a real run for their money in the game's final stages. There's a reason why Laura is the first playable character in the game.

Studying to be a veterinarian, it's Laura's thirst for knowledge that allows her to navigate the rabid animalistic horrors at the summer camp, showing far more responsibility than the others when it comes to key decision-making. As such, she not only kills more villains than most but losing her boyfriend Max during the deadly dockside attack only makes one's heart go out to her more.
