Here is the current status of Amazon Prime Video's The Peripheral season 2, as well as known details regarding release, cast and storylines. Debuting in October 2022, The Peripheral has inherited the baton of head-scratching sci-fi TV from Westworld, with both shows sharing the creative duo of Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy. Inspired by the William Gibson book of the same name, The Peripheral season 1 follows Chloë Grace Moretz's Flynne Fisher as she enters the future via a robotic body and discovers her world has become a living experiment for shady agents from 2099 London.

Making enemies out of both Dr. Cherise Nuland, representing the Research Institute, and the Klept mafia protecting Lev Zubov, Flynne and her small band of allies face a tough battle in The Peripheral season 1's finale. The 2032 timeline requires saving from an accelerated Jackpot apocalypse, while the future must be protected from Cherise's villainous plan to install personality-altering implants into the population's brains. Needless to say, The Peripheral season 1's finale leaves plenty for season 2 to cover. Audiences are invited to ponder the story's continuation, and while much about The Peripheral season 2 remains under wraps, some details are either confirmed or becoming clearer.

While Amazon Prime Video is yet to officially announce The Peripheral has been renewed for season 2, development beyond the debut season has already begun. Jonathan Nolan (via DigitalTrends) has revealed creative juices are flowing in The Peripheral's writing room, at least confirming the sci-fi series is seeking to push its story further than a single season. Given that The Peripheral overtook The Rings of Power as Prime Video's top new streaming original, the prospect of Amazon green-lighting a second season appears strong.

When Could The Peripheral Season 2 Release?

With The Peripheral season 2 not yet confirmed, a release date remains unannounced. Assuming the go-ahead is eventually given, however, an early-mid 2024 premiere looks fair for The Peripheral season 2. This estimate is based on typical gaps between Amazon's Prime Video original TV shows, and the production time for The Peripheral season 1. The futuristic effects of 2099 London also mean the post-production phase cannot be underestimated. The Peripheral season 1 wrapped filming almost a year before the premiere began streaming, and although the void before season 2 is unlikely to stretch on quite that long, viewers should avoid expecting a quick turnaround for The Peripheral's next chapter.

The Peripheral Season 2's Cast & Characters

One would expect much of The Peripheral's main cast to return for season 2. That includes Chloë Grace Moretz as Flynne Fisher, Jack Reynor as Burton Fisher, Eli Goree as Conner Penske, and Gary Carr as Wilf Netherton. Due to future timeline robotics in The Peripheral, even death fails to end a character's presence in the story permanently. In terms of new additions, The Peripheral has already introduced most major figures from William Gibson's novel. Season 2 could, however, shine more light on the mysterious Neoprims, bringing a new faction into the mix. Alternatively, The Peripheral season 2 may draw upon its source material to add Hamed al-Habib and the inhuman Patcher group.

What Could The Peripheral Season 2's Story Be?

The Peripheral season 2 would likely continue unwrapping the wider story of saving the world. Flynne Fisher must still halt the Jackpot in her 2032 stub timeline, while the Research Institute cannot be allowed to roll out its neural implant program in 2099. More specifically, The Peripheral's next chapter must expand upon the Neoprims and their anti-establishment crusade against the three-pronged regime upheld by the R.I., Klept and Met. Should Neoprims get their hands on Cherise's implant plans, however, an even darker future could beckon in The Peripheral season 2. The only outcome more concerning than a population falsely manipulated into peace is a population falsely manipulated into war.
