The recent series finale of Legacies made for a perfect ending for Hope and the Mikaelson family. The story of Hope started when Klaus and Hayley had a one-night stand in The Vampire Diaries before the events of The Originals brought them together again. The two of them went through a lot of ups and downs but they were never a romantic pair, despite their brief period of “will-they-won’t-they” in the earlier seasons.

However, they always had a lot in common and undeniable chemistry that didn’t escape the fans’ notice. Unfortunately, the show didn’t end on a happy note for either of those characters, and fans were left wondering what would’ve happened if they actually got together.

Wouldn't Work

They Had A Rocky Start

Klaus and Hayley met back in Mystic Falls during season 4 of The Vampire Diaries when she helped his hybrids break their sire bond to him, so that wasn’t exactly a good start. To make matters worse, once Klaus learned about Hayley's pregnancy, his reaction was not exactly ideal. He threw what one can only classify as a tantrum before fleeing the scene and letting Elijah clean up the mess.

And even after he accepted the pregnancy he still spent the majority of those nine months waging wars against Marcel and the witches instead of ensuring their child’s safety. Although he quickly came to his senses and changed his ways, it doesn’t erase his past actions.

Elijah Was In Love With Hayley

The Vampire Diaries franchise is well known for its epic love triangles, but when it came to The Originals, the writers chose a different approach. Even though Hayley and Klaus were having a child together, it was made clear in the beginning that they didn't have any romantic feelings for each other. Instead, Hayley started to get close to Elijah.

This ruined any potential for Klayley to happen, despite the fact that some fans thought that Hayley had much more chemistry with Klaus than with Elijah. In fact, most fans thought that the dynamic between the three of them was too weird and a major flaw of The Originals.

Klaus Cursed Hayley And The Crescents

In season 2, the Mikaelson's were dealing with a brand new threat, as Dahlia came to New Orleans to take Hope. Arguably, Klaus and Hayley have both made some poor decisions in The Originals in their desperation to keep their daughter safe. But while Haley was wrong to let Elijah dagger Klaus indefinitely and run off with their child, Klaus lost all his rights to complain because of the way he reciprocated.

He took it too far when he made Dahlia put a curse on the whole pack, including Hayley. They turned into their wolf forms and were unable to turn back, only becoming human on the night of the full moon. Even though eventually they forgave each other, it's undeniable that it drove a wedge between them and made trusting one another more difficult.

They Were Better As Friends

Although a lot of fans are convinced that a love story between the two characters would be epic, others thought that their friendship sufficed. It was clear that the two of them cared deeply about each other and they loved one another in their own way.

However, it was refreshing to see a platonic relationship between them as not every relationship has to end in romance. After all, soulmates aren't always lovers and Klaus and Hayley's relationship is the perfect example of that, as they had one of the strongest friendships in The Vampire Diaries Universe.

They Would Fight Too Much

The fact that they were a lot like each other made a lot of sense for their friendship but in a romantic relationship, it would’ve worked against them. The problem was that they were too much alike. Considering that they were both quite stubborn, hot-headed, and untrusting, it’s easy to assume that their relationship would’ve been riddled with countless fights.

Their arguments and fights were endless already, especially in the earlier seasons with certain fights becoming some of the most iconic scenes of the show. Their relationship had a fair share of ups and downs and that would only increase if romance and jealousy were added to the mix.

Perfect Together

They Could Always Count On Each Other

The characters of The Originals faced many hardships but they could always count on each other’s support through difficult times. Klaus and Hayley understood each other better than anyone and knew exactly what the other needed to hear.

For example, when Hayley was struggling to come to terms with her transformation, Klaus was the one to help her through it and encourage her to take back her place as queen of the Crescents. Meanwhile, after Cami died, Hayley was the one to help Klaus through his grief.

Their Goals Aligned

There were so many threats that drove them apart and made the relationships between them quite complicated. However, it was a very rare occasion for Klaus and Hayley to be on opposite sides of a feud.

The two of them fought side by side against their enemies and time and time again they came victorious. Their goal has always been to keep their daughter safe and they worked really well together in order to achieve it.

They Would Be Unstoppable

After Klaus broke his curse in The Vampire Diaries, he became the first hybrid and the most powerful creature in the world as he was both a werewolf and a vampire. But he was unable to turn others into hybrids, leaving him to be the first and last of his species. However, that changed when Hayley died with Hope’s blood in her system as that turned her into a hybrid too.

As the only hybrids in existence at the time other than Tyler, they would be an unstoppable pair. They are both very powerful but together no one would dare go against them.

They Understood Each Other

The Originals Klaus and Hayley

Klaus and Hayley had a special connection, not only because of their many similarities but because they come from similar backgrounds. They both grew up feeling unwanted, Klaus with an abusive father and Hayley with unloving foster parents, which is why they were so determined to do right by their daughter.

They hold immense power and considering that they were werewolves before their transformation, it’s fair to say that they were each other’s pack. They shared mutual respect and were able to leave their guard down around each other which lead to some really sweet scenes between them.

They Had A Refreshing Dynamic

When it comes to supernatural dramas, there are several overdone tropes that have outlived their welcome. That includes the idea of every "big bad" character needing an “innocent" character to fix them and change them for the better. This is why Klaus and Hayley would have a completely fresh dynamic as a couple.

Hayley had never put up with Klaus' nonsense and she never hesitated to hold him accountable for his actions. Although their arguments were endless, they had undeniable chemistry and a powerful dynamic that would make their relationship new and unique.
