The characters of The Office have been through a lot of highs and lows together, enduring terrible and bizarre bosses, scandalous affairs, and having their personal lives displayed for the world to see in documentary form. This eccentric crew massively varies in personality, and morality with some of the characters judging and even plain hating each other.

But despite many of the Dunder Mifflin employees clashing with some of their workmates more than others, many of them maintain exceptionally good friendships and display the qualities anyone would want to see their closest companions.

Kevin

Kevin Malone laughing for the camera in The Office

This accountant may be known for being a bit dense and greedy, but Kevin proves himself to be pretty sweet and insightful. He boldly calls out the state senator at his own event hosted in his home for being disrespectful and exploitative towards Angela and Oscar.

He also proves himself to be a trustworthy and loyal friend as he keeps Oscar’s secret about his affair (even if that morally wasn’t the best decision). Kevin is also supposedly great at poker and would probably teach you good techniques for a fun Vegas trip.

Dwight

Dwight dressed as Jim in The Office

While Dwight is an outlandish character who frequently acts completely inappropriately, his lack of social convention compels him to go to extreme lengths to provide unquestioning help and support for those he cares about including hiring a hitman to severely injure someone for Angela (not knowing that she was trying to kill Oscar).

Dwight is also of course incredibly loyal to Michael, Jim, and Pam, who he sees as close friends. Loyalty being a valuable trait in friendships, this would also certainly make Dwight a great friend in also has a considerable amount of survival knowledge which would certainly come in handy in a pinch

Oscar

While Oscar can be slightly obnoxious and a bit of a know-it-all, Oscar comes through for his friends when they need him and offers up his place for Angela to live with when she becomes homeless, even though she tried to have his legs broken.

This is especially generous as she also has a very young baby that would make a lot of noise and there’s no way Angela wouldn’t have brought at least a couple of cats. A bonus is that Oscar loves a quiz night and tends to do well enough to go regularly. If you get invited along you might be lucky enough to win a share in a considerable cash prize.

Erin

Erin smiling in The Office

While the redheaded receptionist is known for being a bit ditsy, everyone Erin meets seems to completely adore her. Her ability to charm everyone she meets despite at times being frustratingly clueless proves how wonderful she really is to be around. Erin’s kind nature is also demonstrated when she moves to Florida to work providing live-in care for an elderly woman she has only just met.

And even though she is pretty terrible at the job, Irene is very protective of Erin and is incredibly skeptical of Andy when he abandons his job to show up in Florida to confess his feelings for her despite being involved with someone else.

Meredith

Meredith from The Office smiling, sat in the conference room

As the wildcard character of The Office that can’t say no to drink and frequently exposes herself at random moments, Meredith may seem like a bit too much of a loose cannon to be a trustworthy friend. But this redhead knows how to party and knows the name of every bar in Scranton, this indicates she would definitely show her friends a good time.

Meredith especially proves that she is good at helping people loosen up when she takes Pam out for a drink after she gave Meredith head lice. This is also a sweet gesture as she recognizes that Pam is stressed out and needs to let off some steam. This proves how empathetic Meredith is even as a work friend.

Phyllis

Phyllis smiling in The Office

In a lot of ways, Phyllis can be mean, especially to Angela, and occasionally has a brutally sharp tongue on her but ultimately she is a very sweet Dunder Mifflin employee. Phyllis proves she puts a lot of care and patience into her friends when she makes homemade knitted mittens as her secret Santa gift and as a leaving present to Michael.

This shows how committed she is to the people she cares about. Phyllis also supports Dwight through his heartbreak over Angela and makes an effort to help him see that he needs to move on as she had started dating Andy.

Kelly

Kelly Kapoor smiling for the camera in The Office

Kelly might be an attention seeker that loves drama but she comes through for people she cares about. She is incredibly loyal to Erin as a friend and when Andy shows up at the office Christmas party with his new girlfriend, she instantly vows to be horrible to her just to make Erin feel better.

While this isn’t the nicest move from Kelly, it certainly demonstrates a commitment to her friends. Kelly is also a really interesting character who is up to date with pop culture and likes to have fun experiences. While she can be vicious and a little unhinged, Kelly would be a great friend to have in your corner.

Daryl

Darryl sitting behind a desk, talking to the camera on The Office

While at times Daryl does not have a lot of patience for his Dunder Mifflin colleagues, he tends to step up and do the right thing and occasionally even goes out of his way to be kind to his workmates.

When he goes into Michael’s office to ask him for a raise, he realizes that Michael is getting paid way less than he should be and encourages him to demand a raise himself, even going to head office in New York with him. He also consoles Michael after his breakup with Holly by singing the blues with him (sort of), despite having been forced to witness the whole painful split against his will.

Pam

Pam smiling while resting with her face in her hand in The Office

Pam is one of the sweetest characters in The Office and often tries to make her colleagues feel included and welcome. Pam is a great friend to Michael and Dwight, two of the more disliked colleagues, and even teams up with her romantic rival, Karen to plan a rival party to Angela’s uptight office gathering when Angela makes Karen feel unwelcome and judged.

Pam also even remains supportive of Angela wishing her to have a “beautiful wedding” when Angela openly mocks some of Pam’s wedding choices. This demonstrates the endless patience Pam has even for people she is not that close to and goes to show what a great friend she would be.

Jim

Jim Halpert at his desk

Jim Halpert is usually more focused on pranking his colleagues than making friends in The Office, but while they mostly clash, Jim has a great friendship with Dwight throughout the show. Jim offers consolation and empathy to Dwight when he is heartbroken over Angela breaking up with him and teams up with him to effortlessly land major clients on sales trips by adopting various personas.

But what most makes Jim an amazing friend is how great of a best man he is for Dwight by adhering to all his very niche traditions, repairing his relationship with Kevin, and getting Michael to attend as his best man as a surprise.
