While Jim and Pam might be the couple from The Office that’s talked about the most, there are other couples on the show that fans were interested in. Michael Scott had many different girlfriends throughout the show, but the only one who was ever a good match for him was Holly Flax. While it took them a long time to get together in the end, they ended up married and having children. While Holly and Micahel might have been a good couple, there’s also an argument to be made for why AJ would have been a better match for her.

Here are the five reasons why Holly should have been with Michael and five why Michael was right for her.

AJ: AJ WAS MORE RESPECTFUL

Michael Scott as a character is often rather clueless, and he can be rather pushy. While many fans forgive him for his faux pause because he means well, there are a lot of things he does that aren’t very acceptable. For example, when he got onto her work computer and downloaded a private letter she had written on there. AJ seemed to be a lot more socially aware and respectful of Holly’s needs and wishes whereas Micahel could be more selfish.

MICHAEL: THEY GOT EACH OTHER’S SENSE OF HUMOR

Michael Scott is definitely a weirdo in a lot of ways. He is rather eccentric, and he’s not the easiest person to get along with. He also was someone who prided himself on his sense of humor even though he often was more awkward than funny. One of the things that made his relationship with Holly so great is that she was a bit eccentric, too. Their senses of humor were very evenly matched, and they were always making each other laugh. Clearly, they found somewhat of a kindred spirit in one another.

AJ: MICHAEL OFTEN CROSSED LINES HE SHOULDN’T HAVE

While Michael might be a character that many fans grew to love, he definitely has his flaws. He can be really inappropriate with the things he says and does. When he first met Holly, he fell hard and fast for her, and he definitely didn’t have a lot of chill. He also was quite rude to AJ when he found out that he was dating Holly. These are just a couple of examples of Michael’s immaturity and how he would cross lines that aren’t appropriate to cross.

MICHAEL: THEY GOT ALONG REALLY WELL

While Michael might have his flaws, he also has his good qualities. He is rather devotee to the people he dates, and he definitely cared a lot about Holly. These two also got along really well when they were dating. While they had some issues to work out, they seemed to really enjoy each other’s company. They were often joking around with another and had a lot of things to talk about. This ease when they were together is a good sign that their relationship would last for a long time.

AJ: HOLLY DIDN’T COMPLETELY SUPPORT MICHAEL’S CREATIVE ENDEAVORS

While Holly was often supportive of Michael, there was one glaring time where she was not. When Michael showed everyone his movie, Threat Level Midnight, Holly was really pretty rude about the whole thing. While Michael might be ridiculous at times, he clearly cared a lot about this project. This doesn’t mean she had to lie to him about it, but she could have tried a little harder to be supportive given that she already knew Michael’s personality.

MICHAEL: THEY LET EACH OTHER BE THEMSELVES

One of the best things about a healthy relationship is being able to feel like yourself around another person. Both Michael and Holly understand each other well, and they could be their true selves around one another. Even though they both had their eccentric sides, they saw the best in one another, and they didn’t judge one another. Michael definitely adored Holly, and Holly liked Michael despite all of his weird traits.

AJ: HOLLY AND MICHAEL’S RELATIONSHIP COULDN’T SURVIVE LONG DISTANCE AT FIRST

While Michael and Holly seemed like a great match when they first started dating, their relationship fell apart rather quickly. When Holly got transferred to Nassau, she broke up with Michael on the drive to move her stuff. She wasn’t even willing to give long distance a shot and see if things could work out. This definitely wasn’t a good sign that she really wanted to be in that relationship.

MICHAEL: MICHAEL WAS WILLING TO MOVE HIS LIFE TO BE WITH HOLLY

On the other hand, Michael was always all in with Holly. Even though he loved his job at Dunder Mifflin and it was basically his whole life, he cared more about Holly. So, when she needed to move to Denver to take care of her parents, he was willing to go with her so they could stay together. At this point, they had known each other longer, and this was a big step to show Michael was in it for the long haul.

AJ: AJ HAD A LOT LESS ISSUES THAN MICHAEL

Holly Michael

Michael Scott might be an interesting and entertaining character to watch on a television show, but dating him wouldn’t be a fun time. He clearly had a lot of issues and insecurities, and he never really knew how to act around people. AJ seemed like a normal guy and like he would have been easy to get along with. He probably would have been a more stable person for Holly emotionally, and she wouldn’t have had to navigate all of Michael’s quirks for the rest of her life.

While there are some reasons why AJ might have been a good match for Holly, the truth is that Holly clearly liked Michael more. These two made each other happy, and they were clearly in love with one another. While not everything about their relationship was perfect, the happiness they brought to one another makes them a good match.
