The Night Agent Season 2 Picked Up By Netflix After Stellar Debut Week

This article contains SPOILERS for The Night Agent

The Night Agent showrunner answers about the possibility of season 2. Currently streaming on Netflix, The Night Agent is led by Gabriel Basso in the role of FBI Agent Peter Sutherland. The series, which is based on the novel of the same name by Matthew Quirk, kicks into gear when Peter receives a phone call that plunges him into a conspiracy. Luciane Buchanan, Fola Evans-Akingbola, Sarah Desjardins, Eve Harlow, Phoenix Raei, Enrique Murciano, D. B. Woodside, and Oscar nominee Hong Chau also star.

In an interview with Deadline, The Night Agent creator and showrunner Shawn Ryan was asked about the possibility of season 2, especially considering that there's no follow-up book for the show to continue off on. Ryan begins his answer bluntly, explaining that the writing team won't begin to worry about a second installment until the conspiracy drama is officially picked up by Netflix. But as he moves deeper into his response, Ryan details some potential ideas and important questions that need to be answered. Here is the response below:

"Listen, until there is a season 2 picked up, the writers and I aren’t getting paid to figure that out until it becomes official in some way. I certainly have some ideas; I probably want to keep those to myself until the time comes. What I will tell you is that the initial pitch for this show that we sold to Netflix was that each season would tell its own, mostly self-enclosed, a beginning, middle and end story, and any future seasons would include a few but not most of the characters that we saw in the previous season.

That was the original plan; I think it’s still a pretty solid plan. To me it was important. I don’t want to tell this specific story over five seasons, I want to tell this specific story in one season and give some satisfaction to the audience that they see how things turn out. They learn what the truth is about Peter’s father, they learn what the conspiracy was. You can feel a sense of completion. If we are successful enough that Netflix wants more seasons, I think there’d be a whole new world in which you would see a limited number of characters from this current season going into that. But that’s something that I’d have to sit down with the writers and have it all figured out.

I really love the questions that we need answered on: What does it mean that Peter would be a night agent? Where is he going? Now that Rose is going back to California to try to restart her tech career, where does that leave Peter and Rose? I think these are all questions that we almost certainly would love to answer in a potential Season 2, and I certainly hope we get the opportunity to do that."

Why The Night Agent Season 2 Could Be Likely

Peter Sutherland pointing a gun in The Night Agent

In the glut of conspiracy thrillers, politically-tinged or otherwise, that routinely debut on Netflix and other streaming services, The Night Agent stands out from the pack due to its strong reviews. The show has been praised for knowing how to deploy the tropes most commonly linked with the genre, from betrayals and unexpected reveals. It's not surprising given the pedigree of Ryan, who has worked on crime series as diverse as The Shield and Terriers, but the positive buzz is a factor along with the expected viewership.

The Night Agent debuted on March 23, which means the show hasn't yet had the chance to accumulate weekly viewership. But going by the performance of past thriller series, like Netflix's The Recruit, it's possible that The Night Agent could enjoy a similar trajectory of spending several weeks on the Top 10 Charts.

The renewal for The Recruit season 2 wasn't a surprise when it came because the show had been performing strongly by that point. If the same happens, it's clear that there are plans for The Night Agent season 2. But before that can be confirmed, the series has to match its positive reviews with consistent viewership. Given the popularity of thrillers, that shouldn't be a tough hurdle to cross.
