Captain Marvel's personality could not fully shine in her first solo movie, but The Marvels is set up to avoid repeating this problem. The long-awaited debut of Carol Danvers in the Marvel Cinematic Universe came in 2019, but the reception to Brie Larson's character was a bit mixed. The MCU took the majority of Captain Marvel's origin back to 1995 and saw her work for the Kree Empire as an elite soldier. However, it was through this narrative decision that some audiences found it difficult to connect to Carol Danvers.

Captain Marvel's story limited how much of Carol's personality the movie could really show. The cocky part of her attitude was seen throughout, but the fun-loving side of Larson's character was more fleeting. This resulted from the MCU's new Captain Marvel origin, which included brainwashing by the Kree to make her forget about her past on Earth. While not quite as emotionless as Bucky Barnes after Hydra's brainwashing, it is still true that Captain Marvel served as a movie where Carol and audiences went on the same journey of trying to figure out who she really is.

The Marvels Can Fully Show Carol Danvers’ Personality

Carol Danvers looking serious in Captain Marvel

Thanks to the amount of time that passes between Captain Marvel and its sequel, Carol Danvers' personality can be fixed in The Marvels. She has had decades to patrol the cosmos, figure out who she is, and continue remembering her life. This should allow The Marvels to star a version of Carol Danvers whose personality is no longer hidden. Furthermore, the sequel bringing Monica Rambeau and Kamala Khan into the picture will allow Captain Marvel to have some other big personalities by her side and showcase how she acts opposite of them.

The MCU has teased some more of Carol Danvers' personality in her appearances after Captain Marvel. Her brief role in Avengers: Endgame saw her confidently enter the battlefield against Thanos. The post-credits appearances of Carol in Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings and Ms. Marvel also gave audiences tiny glimpses of her evolving personality. This includes how Carol expresses herself through her looks, as her evolving hairstyle and costume might also be teases of how different she will be in The Marvels.

The MCU Needs Audiences To Accept Captain Marvel For Phase 6

Carol Danvers aka Captain Marvel in the MCU

The Marvels fixing Captain Marvel's personality problem could also be critical to the MCU's future. Brie Larson's character is expected to play a pivotal role in Phases 5 and 6. Her starring role in The Marvels should help set up Captain Marvel's role in Avengers: The Kang Dynasty and Avengers: Secret Wars. This could include her becoming the leader of the Avengers. For this to happen effectively, audiences need to rally around Carol Danvers to make her one of the franchise's more popular and beloved characters. If The Marvels cannot help Marvel accomplish this, the overall impact of the Multiverse Saga could suffer.

The connection audiences had to the main heroes in the Infinity Saga is one of the reasons that Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame were so effective. Viewers had plenty of time to learn about these characters and see them interact with each other. Captain Marvel is like many other newer MCU heroes who should be prominently featured in Phase 6's conclusion. So, The Marvels making sure audiences want to see more of Carol Danvers and accepting her place in the future is important.
