Warning! This post contains SPOILES for The Mandalorian season 3, episode 2.

The Mandalorian season 3 may be taking the relationship between Din Djarin and Bo-Katan Kryze in the wrong direction. The Mandalorian season 3, episode 2 “Chapter 18 – The Mines of Mandalore” showed the beginning of a shift in the dynamic between Din and Bo-Katan. Where first they were both generally distrusting of each other, as each resented the way the other viewed Mandalorian culture, it’s now gradually morphing into a partnership. Given the monumental end of The Mandalorian season 3, episode 2, both Bo-Katan and Mando’s worlds will be turned upside down, likely bringing them closer together and setting the stage for how their relationship develops throughout the rest of the season.

The Mando and Bo-Katan dynamic is certainly one of the show’s most compelling, an interesting case study of the different factions of Mandalorian culture and how they’ve splintered the people of Mandalore across history. The two of them becoming genuine allies, even friends, is comparable to the examples of Mandalorians and Jedi that have fought side by side, despite their storied past. And yet, some of The Mandalorian audience took to Twitter after season 3’s second episode aired to express concern that the show may be setting up Din’s and Bo-Katan’s relationship to go even further than friendship.

The Mandalorian May Be Setting Up A Din Djarin & Bo-Katan Romance

Din Djarin and Bo-Katan Kryze

Despite Star Wars having included romance since the original Star Wars movie, the Disney+ live-action shows have so far neglected to include it prominently in their storytelling. Even Obi-Wan Kenobi ignored the importance of Obi-Wan's relationship with Satine Kryze, never once mentioning her, despite his grief over her being undoubtedly intertwined with his Order 66 trauma. As such, any of the Mandoverse shows or other Disney+ Star Wars series could be the first to introduce romance in its storytelling – even The Mandalorian. If Bo-Katan and Mando are set to spend much of season 3 together, learning to trust each other more, there’s technically no reason their relationship couldn’t become romantic in nature.

This is especially true now that Mando has made it clear that he trusts Bo-Katan with Grogu. Grogu is the most important person in Din Djarin's life, and he would never let his guard down with anyone he didn’t trust around him. The more time he and Bo-Katan spend together throughout season 3, and the more her relationship with Grogu develops, too, the more plausible it becomes that Mando could develop romantic feelings for her – particularly as The Mandalorian season 3 is also setting up the idea of Mando learning to let go of the covert’s Creed and finding his own path. His relationship with Bo-Katan could and likely will play a key part in that developmental arc.

Why A Din Djarin & Bo-Katan Romance Shouldn't Happen

Despite a romance between Din Djarin and Bo-Katan being a genuine narrative possibility, that doesn’t mean it should actually happen. The core of The Mandalorian has always been the father-son relationship between Din and Grogu. Now that Grogu has chosen the Mandalorian and there is no reason for them to be separated, their relationship can grow even further. Din doesn’t need to be afraid to let himself get attached, and Grogu can develop his skills and personality comforted by the knowledge that Din wanted him to stay. Though Bo-Katan should become a valuable ally and friend, a romance between her and Din would alter the main narrative much, as romantic plots often do.

Additionally, if part of Mando’s character development is his letting go of his all-or-nothing dedication to the Creed, then it shouldn’t be because of a romantic relationship with Bo-Katan. They can help each other find a balance, as is likely now that Bo-Katan has seen the Mythosaur, but Din’s character development in this aspect of the story should be because he sees the covert’s faults himself. Injecting romance into that storyline would overcomplicate things, especially for a character like Din who, besides his relationship with Grogu, is unaccustomed to having genuine friends in his life, only convenient allies or fellow believers. All in all, the relationship between Din Djarin and Bo-Katan in The Mandalorian would be better off remaining platonic.
