Lord of the Rings fans are undoubtedly awaiting the debut of The Rings of Power on Amazon this September. Not only did Tolkien create a fully fleshed-out world, but the strength of Middle-Earth lies in its characters. One of the best characters in the franchise is Peregrin Took.
This is attributed to the great quotes that he has. Pippin is seen as the comic relief of the trilogy, with quotes such as "It comes in pints?" upon learning that he can get a bigger beer mug. However, he does have more heartfelt quotes, like "I'm here to look after you" when he finds an injured Merry after the Battle of Pelennor Fields.
Pippin Talking About Joining The Fellowship
"Anyways, you need people of intelligence on this sort of...mission...quest...thing."
After spying on the secret Council of Elrond to which he wasn't invited, Pippin runs in and wants to join the fellowship.
Pippin is known to be impulsive, and he blurts out something that he thinks would make him valuable. The irony is, that he does have intelligent moments in future films (such as his plan to bring down Saruman in The Two Towers).
Pippin Discusses His Plan With Merry
"The closer we are to danger, the farther we are from harm. It's the last thing he'll suspect."
Treebeard is on his way to the edge of Fangorn Forrest to drop off Merry and Pippin so that they can head back home. However, Pippin has a plan.
Treebeard and Merry think that Pippin's quote doesn't make much sense, and, on the surface, it doesn't. Pippin knew that Treebeard would be angry with Saruman and make him pay for cutting down so many trees to fuel his war machines. Because of this clever idea, Pippin was the catalyst and most responsible for the fall of Isengard.
Pippin's Attempts At Trying To Lighten The Humor
"Well, that isn't so bad."
During the siege of Gondor, all hope seems lost as Sauron's army makes its way up the seven levels of Minas Tirith. Gandalf and Pippin are sharing what they think are their final moments together in this heartfelt moment.
Gandalf had died fighting the powerful Balrog in the Mines of Moria and he describes what he felt and saw before being brought back to life. Pippin is starting to accept his fate, and Gandalf's description of death as a white shore with a far green country and swift sunrise seems peaceful.
Pippin Trying To Work Out What Song To Sing
"But we have no songs for great halls and...evil times."
Feeling guilty for Boromir's death, Pippin pledges his loyalty to Denethor and becomes a Guard of the Citadel. Denethor has requested Pippin sing a song for him while he eats.
Pippin's response is a subtle shot at Denethor's demeanor after seeing how he disowned Faramir and is sending him to his presumed death. However, Denethor is far too arrogant, angry, depressed, and disappointed to notice.
Pippin Commenting On The Food
"The salted pork is particularly good."
Merry and Pippin are eating and celebrating the collapse of Isengard. Gimli remarks on all he, Aragorn, and Legolas did to try to rescue them, only to see them having a good time.
Here, the "salted pork" Pippin is referring to is actually an orc. Gandalf brushes this quote off, which harkens back to his conversation with Frodo about hobbits in The Fellowship of the Ring - "You can learn all that there is to know about their ways in a month and yet, after a hundred years, they can still surprise you."
Pippin and Faramir Have A Heart To Heart
"I think you have a strength of a different kind. And one day your father will see it."
Appearing on the extended edition of The Return of the King, Pippin is beginning to regret his decision to join the tower guard, but Faramir eases his worries by giving him his old uniform.
Pippin returns the favor by giving Faramir confidence, something Denethor doesn't do. Pippin isn't trying to compare Faramir to Boromir, but rather point out that Faramir has the strength of the heart more than with a sword. Denethor finally sees this right before his own demise.
Pippin Tries To Pay Tribute To Boromir
"The mightiest man may be slain by one arrow...and Boromir was pierced by many."
Also appearing on The Return of the King (Extended Edition), Denethor asks Pippin how he escaped the Uruk-Hai when Boromir did not "as mighty a man as he was." Pippin responds with this quote.
His intention was to comfort the grieving father and show that Boromir was indeed a mighty and courageous man; that he didn't die for nothing in that epic scene. However, it backfired as Denethor responds with a horrific expression, his heart breaking once again. Pippin just made things worse.
Pippin Reveals What He Saw
"A tree. There was a white tree in a courtyard of stone. It was dead. The city was burning."
Pippin is drawn to the Palantir, and he looks into it only to be met with Sauron, who now thinks Pippin has the Ring.
Pippin's curiosity usually gets him into trouble and while looking into the Palantir wasn't a good idea, it turned out to be not a bad idea. He was able to get a glimpse of The Enemy's plan - Sauron will unleash his army on Minas Tirith.
Pippin's Insatiable Appetite
"What about second breakfast?"
On the way to Rivendell, Pippin's stomach decides to speak for him. Aragorn questions Pippin's appetite, but Pippin presses the issue, leading to Aragorn tossing an apple at his head.
Perhaps one of Pippin's most famous quotes, it introduces his big appetite and sets up future "hungry" moments in the franchise. In a scene in the extended edition of The Return of the King, Pippin even remarks to Faramir about how he isn't likely to grow anymore "except sideways."
Pippin Confides In Gandalf
"I don't want to be in a battle. But waiting on the edge of one I can't escape is even worse."
Pippin pours his heart out to Gandalf as they stand on a balcony in Minas Tirith. Mordor looms in the distance and Pippin is afraid of what is to come.
This quote has different levels. Coming from the Shire, which is essentially sheltered from the rest of Middle-Earth, war is something that doesn't even cross Pippin's mind. He is afraid of the inevitability of battle and realizes he will be part of it whether he wants to be or not.
