The Legend of Vox Machina is one of the most surprising hit television shows of 2022 so far, topping the streaming charts on Amazon Prime Video thanks to a successful Kickstarter campaign.

The adult animated series features characters that Dungeons & Dragons fans will recognize from campaign one of the web series, Critical Role. Each character has unique personality traits and skillsets, but some are more interesting or dynamic than others. With season one coming to an end soon, it is a great time to take a look at the best characters in The Legend of Vox Machina.

Sovereign Uriel Tal'Dorei

Without Uriel, the members of Vox Machina would have never gotten the opportunity to succeed as mercenaries. As the ruler of the kingdom Tal'Dorei, he was the one who hired the team of heroes to complete the job no one else he hired could.

Uriel is another in a long line of characters voiced by Khary Payton, who has had a very successful career in both live-action and voice acting. Uriel does not get much screen time in the show, but he is still a necessary character to the overall plot of the series.

Vax'ildan "Vax" Vessar

Vax and Vex fighting back to back in Legend of Vox Machina

Vax is a somewhat underrated character in The Legend of Vox Machina. He occasionally comes off as one of the more serious characters of the group, but he also has a lighthearted side.

His relationship with his sister Vex is very strong as the two always look out for one another, making for some memorable moments in the series. In addition, his ability to swiftly steal things makes him an essential member of Vox Machina.

Keyleth

Out of all the members of Vox Machina, Keyleth is the only one with actual superpowers. Similar to the DC Comics character Beast Boy, Keyleth can shape-shift into animals, along with other magical abilities.

What makes Keyleth a good character is the determination to prove herself as worthy and capable because she often doubts herself with her low self-esteem. She is very powerful and genuinely loves her teammates. As the series progresses, hopefully, she continues to rise to be one of the best characters.

Vex'ahlia "Vex" Vessar

Vax's sister Vex is arguably the most skilled member of Vox Machina, due to her intelligence and capabilities as an archer. She is very protective over her brother and tends to only share her inner feelings with him. Her connections to the dragons the team faces make her a key member of the team, as she experiences head pain whenever sensing one is near.

Without her being with them, her friends would have perished several times over because she often saves them from dying. Each member of Vox Machina is valuable, but Vex is important to their success.

The Briarwoods

Delilah and Lord Sylas Briarwood have been the main overarching villains in season one of The Legend of Vox Machina. Delilah is voiced by actress Grey Griffin, who is known for several iconic voice roles, including Azula, one of the best villains from Avatar: The Last Airbender.

Sylas and Delilah are great villains because of how brutal and mysterious they are. Percy constantly warns his friends of how dangerous the husband and wife duo are, as they murdered his family long ago, and he seeks vengeance The show is much better with them in it, and it will be interesting to see how the rest of the Briarwoods' arc plays out this season.

Scanlan Shorthalt

It is no secret that Scanlan is in The Legend of Vox Machina for comedy relief purposes. Like other actors on the show who are reprising their Critical Role characters, Scanlan is voiced by Sam Riegel, who does a phenomenal job.

While sometimes over-the-top with his humor, Scanlan brings light to the show that no other character does, through relieving tension, serving as a distraction at times, or entertaining characters with his many songs. Scanlan is easily the most fun and one of the best characters in a show with dark and horrific moments in every episode. He rarely shows any type of seriousness, but his ability to get his friends out of sticky situations on numerous occasions is second to none. While the group as a whole has moments where they all take things a little too lightly, Scanlan has been consistent with his attitude since episode one, and that is what makes him such a great character.

Grog Strongjaw

Grog wielding an axe and grinning in The Legend of Vox Machina

Grog is the heart and soul of the Vox Machina gang while also being the muscle of the team. There are times when Grog feels like a character straight out of Amazon Prime Video's Invincible, another adult animated series on the streaming service.

Grog is one of the best characters on the show because he has an extremely soft side despite being the largest and strongest member of the team. His friendship with Pike, who is only a quarter of his size, is one of the most wholesome relationships in the entire show and shows how much he cares about her and the team. He is protective of his friends but is also very brutal and always willing to start fights with others, which is always fun to see. Getting to see both sides of Grog from episode to episode makes him one of the most fun and versatile characters to watch in The Legend of Vox Machina.

Pike Trickfoot

Ashley Johnson is perhaps best known for The Last of Us, in which she plays Ellie, one of the best main characters, but she has also done a fantastic job as Pike Trickfoot. Pike is the first character to leave Vox Machina in the show, which gives viewers a chance to see one of the members have a story arc outside of the group. This makes Pike one of the best characters on the show because it can be difficult to give each member their own time to shine in such a big group.

She knows that she has a responsibility to the Everlight, the goddess who is the source of her powers, and she takes it upon herself to go on a journey to fix their fractured relationship. Seeing Pike in a more vulnerable state makes viewers connect with her more and witness her maturity grow because she knows she is a liability to her friends without her powers. Fans will hope to see more key moments between Pike, Grog, and the rest of Vox Machina as the season concludes and more seasons are released.

Percival "Percy" de Rolo

Percy pointing a gun in Legend of Vox Machina

While it may be difficult for some fans to agree with, Percy is easily the best character on The Legend of Vox Machina. At first, Percy seems like just another background character within the team, but as the plot progresses, Percy's dark side begins to show itself more. What makes Percy the best character is how much his hatred and thirst for vengeance against the Briarwoods and other enemies fuels his actions. So much information is given to the audience about why he is so angry and the importance behind his weapon of choice, which makes him the character we know the most about.

While he is by no means a nice person, his anger and grief are relatable to a certain extent. However, the way he loses his humanity when tapping into his darker side is shocking to the audience, along with his friends. Time will tell whether or not he remains the best character on the show once he eventually gets the revenge he so desperately craves, but hopefully, he continues to be one of the best parts of the series.
