Avatar: The Last Airbender is considered by many to be one of the greatest animated shows of all time, and the well-realized nature of Avatar's world meant that it was definitely ripe for new source material after the original series ended its critically acclaimed run. The idea for this sequel came in the form of The Legend of Korra, which was a worthy addition to the esteemed legacy of The Last Airbender and ended up being an excellent ride from start to finish.
That being said, The Legend of Korra also has its fair share of inconsistencies, plotholes, and general annoyances that can prove to be the bane for any fan's immersion when it comes to the show. Keeping this in mind, here are ten strange instances present in The Legend of Korra that are downright impossible to ignore for some.
There's No Explanation For How Amon Learned Energybending
Amon coming in as the leader of the Equalists who had the power to take away a person's bending certainly poised him well to be an interesting antagonist... although the nature of his energy bending is still shrouded in mystery.
Given the fact that absolutely nothing was shown regarding the manner in which he achieved this amazing power, one must wonder how Amon managed to develop this ability in the first place. It's a strange thing to ignore.
The Identity Of Suyin's Father Is Still A Mystery
Toph's history with her daughters isn't the greatest, but at least she was there for her daughters when they were growing up, which is more than what can be said for their fathers.
While Lin's father has been revealed to be this mysterious man by the name of Kanto, Suyin didn't even get this treatment — the identity of her father has remained a mystery to this day.
Firearms Should've Been Invented At This Point
Given the sheer number of technological advancements that have happened since the original series ended its run, it's honestly a surprise that the world of The Legend of Korra is completely devoid of firearms.
With the non-benders of the world feeling powerless against most benders, one can't deny that items like firearms would've definitely leveled the playing field.
Raava Was Nonexistent Before The Reveal Of Her Existence In The Legend Of Korra
The Legend of Korra reveals the existence of a spirit named Raava, who has been present in all the Avatars of the past and was directly responsible for bequeathing such immerse power unto them.
However, if that's the case, then it's a surprise that Raava never really appeared for any Avatars in the past to offer them the guidance they needed to get through the bulk of their imposing tasks. In fact, Korra is probably only the second person — along with the very first Avatar, Wan — to even talk to Raava.
It Should've Been Impossible For Korra To Access The Avatar State After Raava Was Pulled Out Of Her Body
It was mentioned before in The Last Airbender that the Avatar State is basically the current Avatar channeling the knowledge of all past Avatars in order to enhance their powers.
However, when Raava was pulled out of Korra's body, this connection was severed, meaning that she could never access the Avatar State even again... or at least, that's how it was supposed to work. Instead, Korra manages to go into the Avatar State once again, even though her connection to the past Avatars had been cut off permanently, which makes absolutely no sense whatsoever.
Bolin's Crush On Korra Disappears In A Flash
Bolin initially had somewhat of a crush on Korra when they first met, which led to an awkward situation when Korra and Mako started to develop feelings for each other.
However, before this love triangle could actually take shape, Bolin's affection seemed to simply vanish. It was a strange shift for the character, although Bolin did manage to redeem himself — and then some — as the series progressed.
The Spirit Portals Were Completely Absent In Avatar: The Last Airbender
Given the fact that Spirit Portals are powerful doorways that light up the entire sky and can allow people to walk over to the Spirit World, one must wonder why Aang and his group didn't use this portal when they needed to do things in the Spirit World.
While the real reason is that the Spirit Portals were written properly for the first time in The Legend of Korra, it's still a fact that may irk fans regardless.
The Fact That Everyone Can Access The Spirit World Contradicts A Statement From The First Series
In Avatar: The Last Airbender, it was clearly stated that only enlightened individuals could access the Spirit World. However, with the introduction of Spirit Portals, it's evident that pretty much anyone can walk through the Spirit World after going through one of these gateways.
This development certainly hampers the mysterious aura that the Spirit World had.
Combustionbending Is Just Weird
In The Legend of Korra fans saw the return of Combustionbending — a rather interesting form of firebending that compressed the point of impact to create a resounding explosion.
However, the shoehorned nature of this ability coupled with the lack of people who can actually use it make it a rather poorly-explained form of bending that could've certainly been fleshed out a bit more in Avatar's second outing.
It's Awfully Convenient That Zaheer Gained The Ability To Fly
It was clarified well beforehand in The Legend of Korra that only one legendary Airbender had mastered the ability to fly — something that was a pipe dream for most people who'd honed and perfected their airbending skills to a T for the longest time.
This is what makes Zaheer's ability to fly so incredibly frustrating — how did somebody who'd only recently gotten the ability to airbend master the art of flying? He might've stolen some sacred airbending texts, but surely more practice would've been required before the skill of flight was acquired?
