Warning! This article contains spoilers for The Last of Us episode 9 and The Last of Us Part II.The Last of Us season 1, episode 9 saw Joel go on a murderous rampage against the Fireflies, with no death setting up The Last of Us season 2 more than the killing of the Fireflies' lead surgeon. After Joel was told that the Fireflies' method of creating a cure would kill Ellie, Joel overcame the fear that plagued him in The Last of Us episode 6 and fought to protect her. After "failing" to protect Sarah and Tess throughout The Last of Us, Joel was adamant about not letting Ellie die in The Last of Us episode 9.
This led to Pedro Pascal's Joel going on a murderous spree throughout the hospital in Salt Lake City. From killing the two soldiers tasked with escorting him out to the men defending the hospital and even Marlene, Joel left next to no one alive in his quest to save Ellie's life. However, none of the deaths and destruction Joel caused will have a bigger impact than the lead surgeon who was about to perform surgery on Ellie, as will be showcased in The Last of Us season 2.
The Surgeon In The Last Of Us Episode 9 Is Abby's Father
The surgeon at the end of The Last of Us episode 9, whom Joel kills without hesitation, is Abby's father. In The Last of Us Part II, Abby is both the antagonist and secondary protagonist of the story. Her journey begins just hours after Joel's rampage, in which she re-enters the hospital in Salt Lake City to find countless Fireflies — most importantly her father — dead.
After the death of the Fireflies at Salt Lake City, Abby and a group of friends journey to Seattle. There, they join the Washington Liberation Front, a militia group embroiled in a brutal war with a primitivist religious cult known as the Seraphites. Despite moving on from the trauma of Salt Lake City, Abby never forgets her father's death or the man who killed him.
Joel’s Killing The Doctor Sets Up His Own The Last Of Us Death
The death of the doctor causes Abby to vow revenge against Joel. After five years, Abby manages to track him down and is responsible for what happens to Joel next in The Last of Us. Abby and the friends she left Salt Lake City with kidnap Joel and brutally kill him.
While on patrol for Jackson, Joel and Tommy naively trust Abby, who they find in the wilderness. She leads the brothers back to her crew, where multiple of them subdue Tommy. Ellie, out searching for Joel, finds the house and is subdued alongside Tommy, forced to watch as Abby bludgeons Joel to death with a golf club. The scene is harrowing, to say the least, and starts the true journey of The Last of Us Part II, which will all lead back to Joel's murder of the doctor in The Last of Us episode 9's ending.
