The latest episode of the hit HBO series took a step back in time to explore some of Ellie's backstory prior to her introduction, namely her relationship with Storm Reid's Riley. Meanwhile, in the present, Ellie was rushing to scrounge up medical supplies in the hopes of saving Joel from succumbing to the stab wound he got from a bandit.

Fresh off of the latest episode's premiere, HBO has released The Last of Us episode 8 trailer.

The video, as seen above, shows Joel still struggling to bounce back from his near-fatal injury while Ellie meets the group of survivors involved in his attack. One such survivor featured in The Last of Us episode 8 trailer is James, played by none other than original Joel actor Troy Baker.

Everything The Last of Us Trailer Reveals About Episode 8

Pedro Pascal in The Last of Us Episode 8

The Last of Us episode 8 trailer seems to indicate it will pick up very shortly after the ending to episode 7, in which Bella Ramsey's Ellie has found some supplies to help stave off Pedro Pascal's Joel from bleeding out. The footage doesn't make it clear how long it's been since he was stabbed, though the snow-covered landscape and Ellie's hunting of local wildlife point towards the episode still being in the winter.

While it was previously confirmed that Troy Baker would be playing a new character in the show, and was briefly seen in previous footage, The Last of Us episode 8 trailer offers the best look yet at his role of survivor James. Originally played by Devil May Cry's Reuben Langdon, James was a member of the cannibals Ellie encountered in the game who nearly derailed her efforts to protect Joel while he recovered. Interestingly, the trailer seems to indicate The Last of Us show is better expanding on their roles, with group leader David even attempting to reason with Ellie at one point to join hs group.

With Baker now confirmed to appear in The Last of Us episode 8, the question now becomes whether the next chapter will also feature original Ellie actor Ashley Johnson as Anna, her character's mother in the show. It's not been revealed when she will arrive in the HBO series and with episode 7 largely acting as a flashback story to focus on Ellie's backstory and relationship with Riley, she could very well appear in episode 8. However, with a group of new characters, and potential threats, being introduced, it may prove more effective to save Johnson for a later The Last of Us episode.
