According to Uhtred, "destiny is all." But when is he going to claim his? After all, his destiny has been drifting further away from him throughout the four seasons of The Last KingdomWith the show's renewal for the fifth season, there are bound to be more interesting plot twists in the adventures of Uhtred (Alexander Dreymon), with some hopefully taking him closer or finally back to Bebbanburg.

There have been many theories online as fans express their opinion of what should happen in the fifth season in the show that has been dubbed "The UK's Game of Thrones." The Last Kingdom is a historical drama, though, and the events in the show adhere closely to Bernard Cornwell's book with the same title. These events should happen if the fifth season is to be as interesting, though.

Uhtred Becoming Lord of Bebbanburg

Beocca and Uhtred in The Takeover of Bebbanburg

Bebbanburg is the one place Uhtred never seems to do well. When Uhtred came to Wessex, he wanted an alliance with Alfred to help him retake his birthright, but all he got was Coccham. He has since helped Alfred and the Saxons keep Wessex and Mercia by acting as the bridge between the Danes and the Saxons. While his fame in Wessex and Mercia has surged, in Bebbanburg, Uhtred looked like a stranger.

His failure to take the castle from his uncle led to the death of Beocca, the only father figure Uhred has had throughout the show. With Beocca, Alfred and Aelswith gone, the pressure to manipulate Uhtred in Wessex has reduced, as has the need for Uhtred in Winchester. If the fifth show will mean anything, it has to involve Uhtred's journey North where it all began.

Brida Making Peace With Uhtred

Brida's Truce with Uhtred in The Last Kingdom S03

Brida and Uhtred were friends and lovers in the first season, and the love between them has never died, although her hatred for Christians won't allow her to accept Uhtred. Uhtred is not a Christian, though, and if anything, he has been betrayed more times than Brida.

The two have what can be described as a story of betrayal. If Brida were to give Uhtred the same loyalty she gave to Ragnar, Uhtred would take more than just Bebbanburg, and Brida's child will be raised in a castle as she has always wanted. She doesn't have much of a future now that Sigtryggr has an agreement with Uhtred and Edward, leaving a truce with her brother as the only way for her to survive in England.

Sigtryggr Forming An Alliance With Uhtred

Uhtred has given all his life to Wessex and lost every time while the Saxons thrive. Uhtred doesn't have any loyalties to any of the two sides, though, and he will form an alliance with the Danes as quickly as he did the Saxons. The only reason why Uhtred hasn't sought a Dane ally to help him take over the North is that the Danes have been short of honorable leaders since Ragnar's death.

With Sigtryggr as his son-in-law and the new king of Eoforwic, Uhtred will have every reason to unite his family and conquer the North. Stiorra would also be glad to see an alliance between the two men she adores the most. That alliance would make him Edward's enemy, though.

Aethelstan Being Groomed To Be The Heir

Aethelstan revealed as heir in The Last Kingdom

According to the books, Aethelstan will become the heir to the throne when Edward dies and, technically, the first king of a United England. Edward doesn't seem to have chosen which of his two sons to name as his heir and also seems unsure about what to do about his complicated marriage.

Giving Aethelstan to Uhtred to teach him how to fight and be a leader was his way of accepting his weakness. Aethelstan will grow up in Northumbria, experiencing both Saxon and Dane culture. If anyone is to become the king of a unified England, it will be him, which will also agree with the books.

Aethelflaed's Death

Lady Aethelflaed looking cautious in The Last Kingdom

All the seasons of The Last Kingdom have seen major deaths, with Alfred's death being the game-changer of the third season and Aelswith and Beocca dying in the fourth. The show is running short of main characters to kill as they run out of pages with the books. Aethelflaed is supposed to die in battle after becoming the Lady of Mercia, so her fate is not far off.

Her vow of chastity meant that she ends her relationship with Uhtred, which may cause strife between the two in the fifth season. Mercia will also not bend the knee to Edward with Aethelflaed on its throne, meaning the quickest way to create one kingdom out of Mercia and Wessex is doing away with her, which will be very sad but necessary.

Unification Of Mercia And Wessex

Lady Aelswith and Edward in Mercia

Mercia and Wessex have been allies for a long time, and Winchester still holds power in Mercia, but the Earldomen there don't appreciate Wessex control. Aethelflaed is Edward's sister, but she is ambitious and skeptical of her brother, which is why she will not be dropping the crown any time soon.

However, the unification of the two is the key to achieving Alfred's dream of a united England, which doesn't seem to be surfacing after four seasons of the show. The fifth season is expected to give some direction towards the union of the kingdoms, and uniting Mercia and Wessex under the crown will be the best way to start.

Uhtred Finding Love

Millie Brady and Alexander Dreymon in The Last Kingdom S04

Since the first season of the show, Uhtred has only been good at two things: Fighting for Wessex and getting baptized. If the fifth season is focused on helping Uhtred achieve his dream, it will have to give him more gains as the main character, and one of those is someone he actually loves and whom he can live with.

His relationship with Aethelflaed is obviously out of the question since they agreed that Mercia was more important than their doomed affair. Eadhit is supposed to be Uhtred's wife in the books, although she seems to be with Finnan now. The show still has to be interesting, and there is no way that is happening if Uhtred doesn't find love.

Lord Aethelhelm's Death

Lady Aelswith hated Uhtred because she was too blind to realize who her real enemies were. Aethelhelm, on the other hand, was supposed to be a mature father-figure that should have helped Edward lead Wessex in the right direction, but he has turned into a snake.

Killing Aelswith is obviously not the last of Aethelhelm's evils. He is ambitious and won't hesitate to kill everyone just to keep his family close to the crown. Being a Villain and a hater of Uhtred, he has no option but to die, and the fifth season would be the best time for the show to avenge poor Aelswith's death.

The War With The Scots

The Scots attacking Bebbanburg in The Last Kingdom S04

The fourth season of The Last Kingdom started with the Scots attacking Aelfric's weakened forces. The Scots remain a major threat to Bebbanburg, and Wihtgar obviously doesn't have the men needed to defeat them.

If Uhtred becomes the Lord of The North, he will have to deal with the Scots or create an alliance with them. An alliance may be too long a shot because The Last Kingdom is not exactly that close to the Union of The Crowns, so Uhtred may be the man that finally deals with the threat of The Scots to the North of England for the time being.

The Fate Of Northumbria

Guthred as King of Northumbria in The Last Kingdom S02

While the show primarily focuses on Wessex, there will be no England if Northumbria is not part of the fold. The Kingdom of Northumbria was formerly unified under the misfit king Guthred who got himself killed. When Edward gives Aethelstan to Uhtred, he requests him to take care of him and help him take over Northumbria but without fighting.

It gives the impression that Uhtred may be the next king of Northumbria with Edward's help, or he will be named a regent with Aethelstan as the king. Whoever gets to rule Northumbria next, the kingdom will have to join the fold in the fifth season.
