Kim had support from Kanye West despite their divorce. The rap/fashion mogul sat in the audience and reportedly helped her prepare for the big day. Kim appeared in a variety of sketches including one mocking her sister Kourtney and an Aladdin sketch where Kim would plant a kiss on Pete Davidson a few weeks before the now-couple sparked dating rumors.
Kim received mixed reviews leading up to her performance. Her fans praised the reality star for showing range in her level of talent while others blasted her comedic ability. One celebrity among the critics was actress Debra Messing who questioned why the iconic show would choose Kim as the host. While crediting Kim for being "a cultural icon," Debra noted how SNL typically picks hosts "who are performers who are there to promote a film, TV show, or album launch. Am I missing something?" she tweeted. The Kardashians premiere revealed Kim's response to Debra's shady tweet. “I’m the underdog. Everyone just thinks I’m a ditz," Kim said in frustration, as noted by Yahoo News.
She returned some slight shade back by referring to Debra as "a girl from Will & Grace," before asking the actress, "‘Why do you care?’” Kim's frustration lies in how amicable she is to her fellow celebrities. “I don’t comment to tear people down, especially another female," she quipped. Kim is used to dealing with public scrutiny, especially on social media. But one area she has always been sensitive about is being respected for her talent as a celebrity. While Kim isn't a singer, dancer, or actor, she and her family have mastered the art of remaining relevant through reality television and built empires from their fame.
Debra did later apologize and said she was not trying to troll Kim. But the billionaire mogul got her payback by blasting Debra on The Kardashians premiere. Instead of responding on Twitter, Kim responded on the show she's paid to appear on. It's checkmate for Kim on her Debra Messing feud. The premiere followed Kim's preparation for SNL and all the work she put into the performance. The last thing she wanted to see was a celebrity criticizing her big moment.
