It may already be nearly three years since Netflix debuted the acclaimed horror series from Mike FlanaganThe Haunting of Hill House, but with Halloween on the way and the Bly Manor follow-up still fresh on the mind, the show is nearly as relevant as ever. In that time, many memories have been conjured up of the phenomenal alternative telling of Shirley Jackson's classic novel.

With those thoughts come some pretty memorable quotes. Some are iconic and some are marked by impeccable delivery. Either way, these quotes live rent-free in the minds of all those who dare to enter Hill House. Rent-free, rather like the ghosts who live eternally in those silently steady walls.

"Because I'm Scared."

A young Luke looks up with a flashlight in The Haunting of Hill House

In "The Twin Thing," more of the bond between Luke and Nell is unpacked. Specifically, when the young twins hear a voice calling for Clara from a chute they slid buttons down, the nerves clearly begin to take over.

Nell mentions to Luke that he's scared and Luke asks how she knows. "Because I'm scared," she replies, forever tying their emotions and ailments to one another.

"This Is Kevin's Coping Mechanism. He Turns Into A Waiter."

Kevin leans on a door frame

While The Haunting of Hill House had plenty of moments that could be described as dark or depressing, it was not devoid of humor. Particularly, the role Kevin plays in "Two Storms" is funny, as he's the only non-Crain at Nell's funeral.

And it's clear just how uncomfortable he is. Everyone who arrives receives an offer from Kevin for food or something to drink. Theo dryly quips, "He turns into a waiter," which is all too relatable for anyone who was ever outside the inner circle of a group of people with shared, uncomfortable pasts.

"Touch Me."

Theo gripping a couch cushion and screaming in The Haunting of Hill House

Theo's solo episode, "Touch," spends a lot of time exploring the potentially supernatural sensitivity that Theo has to the world around her. The gloves she sports help keep those intimate empathy spurts at a distance, but they're not always in play.

The episode culminates brilliantly with Theo screaming at her father to stop touching her, as she learns (albeit in a scattered manner) what happened to her mother. Contrast that with the modern day where she is having a one-night stand and she says simply, with all the weight of the episode behind it, "Touch me."

"I'm A Dream And So Are You And So Are We."

Poppy in Haunting of Hill House

When Poppy Hill turns up in "Screaming Meemies," the setting and atmosphere switch from unsettling and creepy to downright disturbing. The idea of a flapper ghost existing outside of the timeline she belongs in is already chilling enough without the slightly askew and demented dialogue Poppy recites.

Particularly, Poppy stating, "I'm a dream and so are you and so are we" is one of those quotes that just doesn't make enough sense. Imagine being in Olivia's position and quietly accepting this manipulative phantom.

"How Could We?"

Olivia and Hugh in the bedroom

In that same episode, which revolves around Olivia, the tale culminates with one of its classic heartbreak moments that juxtapose the past with the present. This time, it shows what it was like when the Crains first arrived at Hill House.

As the kids bicker over who gets what room, Hugh tries to mediate. Olivia responds, "You go on without me." Hugh, all too unknowingly, replies simply, "How could we?"

"Those Who Walked There, Walked Together."

Hill House lay steadily on fog

Depending on one's view of the very denouement of Hill House, this quote could live rent-free in a good or a bad way. It shifts one of Jackson's most famous lines from "walked alone" to walked together," demonstrating how love possibly somewhat won out over death, if not entirely. It's entirely bittersweet.

The quote has its detractors, who feel it tarnished the sanctity of the original text. However, it can also be seen as a welcome reprieve from the onslaught of torment and emotional whiplash received by these characters. At least some got a semblance of happiness by the end.

"You Are The Last Person Who Should Ever Step Foot In That House Because Of What You Wrote And How You Wrote It."

Haunting Hill House - Hidden Ghost behind Steven

When the family learns that Luke is en route to Hill House, panic immediately sets in for Hugh. Yet, it's more denial and frustration from Steve, who dismisses the notion that Hill House poses any danger to a family he believes is mentally ill.

Yet, Hugh finally gets through to him with the above quote. Flashing Hugh's impassioned, desperate dialogue against the moment when Steven truly saw a ghost (the clock repairer) and spent time in a treehouse (that Hugh never built) results in dialogue that will never be forgotten.

"Nell Didn't Kill Herself, The House Did. You Don't Understand Hill House, Steve, You Never Did."

The Crain family in The Haunting of Hill House

Another bit of dialogue in a confrontation between Hugh and Steven comes towards the end of "Two Storms" when they finally have it out over what actually happens when Crain family members die at Hill House.

The way the line is delivered would be enough for it to live rent-free in any viewer's mind. Yet, the implication of Hugh's true belief in what happens at the house and his outright cutting down of Steven's sanctimonious nature makes for an iconic quote.

"The Rest Is Confetti."

Nell's ghost visits her family in haunting of hill house

This is probably the quote that has had the most notoriety and staying power in the wake of the show's run on the streaming service. It comes in the finale when Nell shares an emotional farewell with her other siblings.

Obviously, Luke's "I don't know how to do this without you" will wrench the heart. Yet, it's Nell's testament to love and life that winds up the standout. "The rest is confetti" is practically the m.o. for Hill House from that point on.

"Nobody Could See Me."

Nell as the Bent Neck Lady

But it's another quote from Nell that is the most memorable. Anyone who watches the masterwork that is "Two Storms" will not soon forget how the episode ends. Again, a parallel is shown between young Nell disappearing for a moment and present Nell resting silently in her coffin.

"Nobody could see me," the past Nell says, drawing a direct connection between her literal disappearance at Hill House and metaphorical inability to reach any of her siblings for help later in life. It's a testament to what the show is about: genuine supernatural encounters and inherited familial trauma. The quote is unforgettable.
