NBC's hit show The Good Place decided to wrap after only 4 seasons. This was an extremely popular and successful show and the decision to end it after only a few seasons saddened many fans. While the show could have drawn on it's success and dragged on, the executive producer and creator Mike Schur thought it was important to maintain the integrity of the show by ending it. He felt it was the right time to end the story and wanted to give the show the perfect finale.
The finale of The Good Place was met with positive reactions, even with fans desire to see more from the show. The true beauty of the finale was the way in which it paid homage to the cast of characters fans had grown to know and love. While many characters got the ending they deserved, there were a few who would have benefited from a slight change. Take a look at the 5 characters who got a fitting ending and the 5 who deserved more.
Deserved More: Glenn
Glenn is one of the most relatable demons on the show. He doesn't seem as evil as many of the others, with his upbeat and bubbly personality and clumsy mishaps. He seems misguided, not malicious. Although he's a demon, he isn't afraid to say when he believes something isn't fair and he warned the humans when the bad place was interfering in their experiment.
Glenn is one of the demons that was not heavily featured in the finale. He was shown to have his body back, but he didn't get anything special. This demon deserves a little bit more for all of the work he did in helping the humans.
Fitting Ending: Vicky
Vicky was another prominently featured demon on The Good Place. She proved to be ambitious and strategic, giving 110% to every project she worked on with plans to make it to the top.
Even though Vicky was working against the humans, fans couldn't help but admire her drive and passion. The finale of the show sees Vicky finally being acknowledged. Vicky deserved the leadership role she was given as she worked hard to earn it from day 1.
Deserved More: The Judge
The Judge was essentially the show's version of "god". She was an interesting and flawed character who further developed her moral compass throughout the show. When the humans first approach her, she seems uninterested in speaking with them. She eventually changed her mind but mostly because she was bored.
The road to a new system was hard and without The Judge's support, they almost failed. In the end, The Judge agreed to the new system. But what happens to The Judge after that? It seems strange that a character that was so integral in the final season doesn't have a role in the finale. Fans would have liked to see the way the new system impacts her life.
Fitting Ending: Jason
In a comedy show, there isn't usually a character that serves as the comedic relief. That isn't true for The Good Place. Jason Mendoza is one of the funniest characters to ever grace the screen. While this character bares the brunt of many jokes, he also has some deep moments. By the end of the series, Jason is a fully formed character who is respected for being uniquely himself.
In the good place, Jason is able to reconnect with his dad and good friend Pillboi. He enjoys spending time with his wife, Janet. He lives out many of his wildest fantasies - and some of them are truly wild! While it seems like Jason's journey ends less than 15 minutes into the finale, he makes a surprising reappearance towards the end of the episode. He had presented a gift to Janet which was lost. Instead of moving forward as he planned, Jason waited an incredibly long time for Janet to return before passing through. As Jason had always struggled with patience, this final moment gave audiences both a good laugh and a reminder of just how much he's grown.
Deserved More: Simone
Simone is one of the supporting characters with the most development. She is Chidi's girlfriend on earth and later becomes a member of the experiment created in the afterlife.
While it is shown that Simone got into the good place, little else is known about what happened to her. With other prominent supporting characters such as Vicky and Shawn getting a final goodbye, it seems like Simone should have one as well.
Fitting Ending: Tahani
Tahani is a successful woman who enjoys tackling new challenges and emerging victorious. In the finale, we were able to see Tahani accomplishing many impressive goals, the most impressive being repairing her relationship with her family. While it was nice to see Tahani successful and happy, it was hard to believe that Tahani would ever find a moment in which she felt complete and totally satisfied.
She considered going through the door but ultimately decided that she wanted something different instead. Tahani ending the series by training to be an architect is the ideal ending for her. She gets to incorporate all of her passions and style while continuing to learn and grow as a person.
Deserved More: Eleanor
Eleanor's ending was close to perfect, but there is one crucial aspect of her final storyline missing - her relationship with her mother. This contentious relationship was a source of a lot of pain for Eleanor and contributed to Eleanor's bad habits and tough outer shell.
Though Eleanor and her mother begin to repair their relationship with the humans go back to earth, there is no follow up after this moment. With characters like Tahini and Jason getting to spend quality time with their families in the good place, it seems fair that Eleanor would be provided with the same opportunity.
Fitting Ending: Chidi
Chidi demonstrates an insane amount of growth throughout the show. The character fans met in the first episode of The Good Place is very different than the man featured in the finale. Chidi, a character who was plagued by his anxiety his entire life and afterlife finally found peace. Watching Chidi exist in this internal sense of peace was heartwarming. He was able to reconnect with friends from earth and find his soulmate in Eleanor.
His goodbye with Eleanor is extremely touching. The relationship that Eleanor and Chidi share feels authentic and sincere. Chidi feels fullfiled earlier than Eleanor and wants to leave, but is willing to stick around just for Eleanor. Eleanor makes the hard decision to let him go and this results in one of the most touching goodbyes in television history.
Deserved More: Janet
Janet's ending was by far the biggest let down of the finale. This character began the series with little personality, existing only to serve the other characters. Janet continued to develop becoming more and more human, forming true connections with the humans and Michael. In the finale, Janet helps each character say goodbye, giving her a beautiful final scene with them. But what about Janet's goodbye? What happens to this character who has grown so much?
Is she stuck in the good place forever? Will she ever form new bonds? How does she cope with loosing all of her friends? What does Janet's ending look like? This character was not given the closure she deserved. Her ending reduced her to the character who lived to serve the others that fans met in the first episode, not the fierce, dynamic, bold, engaging, funny, charismatic, intelligent, and loving Janet she had grown to become.
Fitting Ending: Michael
Michael is obsessed with humans and his greatest desire throughout the series is to be one. He originally hides his desires through insults and jokes, but it is clear this is a strategy to hide his pain and disappointment.
It seemed like Michael would never be able to get what he truly wanted but in the finale he is given just that. It's a delight to see Michael on earth, ecstatic as he completes mundane tasks. After everything Michael has done to help change the world for the better, he deserved to get to live out his dreams as a human.
