The Flash season 4 will give audiences a change of pace in regard to the main villain. The series' season 3 finale aired last week, and it ended with a cliffhanger that has caused many fans to question who would be leading the team next season. The logical choice is Wally West, who took over for Barry Allen as the main Flash in the comics after Barry sacrificed himself to save the multiverse.
Whether or not Barry immediately returns as the lead hero next season is yet to be seen, though that's something we'll find out more about as we get closer to the series' return this fall, as well as events like San Diego Comic-Con. In the meantime, though, questions have turned to who will be next season's big bad. There has been some speculation that Barry will be the villain, but it appears producers Greg Berlanti and Andrew Kreisberg have someone else in mind.
In the wake of The Flash's season finale, TV Line reports that the Scarlet Speedster will indeed be facing off against Clifford DeVoe, aka The Thinker, next season. The CW has yet to confirm the news, and they might not do so for some time. It seems obvious, though, that the character will be the villain in season 4, especially considering that he was teased last season. In the episode 'Abra Kadabra', the villain of the same name, who hails from the future, taunted Flash, saying he knows his greatest foes were always "Thawne, Zoom, [and] DeVoe." Then, Savitar mentions fighting DeVoe in the episode 'Finish Line'.
In both episodes, no one from Team Flash had heard of anyone named DeVoe, though it was heavily implied that they will be fighting the supervillain at some point in the near future, accounting for the gap between when Barry fights Savitar in the present and when he creates Savitar in the future. What's interesting, though, is the choice of villain. The past three seasons have seen Barry facing off against other speedsters, namely Reverse-Flash, Zoom, and now Savitar. They have all been doppelganger villains, and that's something the producers previously said they will avoid next season.
Though he's faced several non-speedster criminals, including several members of his iconic rogues' gallery, Barry's first non-speedster supervillain will be The Thinker, a former lawyer to turned to a life of villainy by becoming a founding member of the Injustice Society, while also using his superior intelligence to help small-time villains commit crimes. Interestingly, DeVoe was actually one of the original Flash's (Jay Garrick) recurring villains, during the Golden Age of Comics. Now that we know who the villain will be, the question is, who will play him?
The Flash returns for season 4 this fall on The CW.
