Season 4 of The Flash has found its Elongated Man in the form of Hartley Sawyer. When The Flash returns in the fall for its fourth season, a number of changes to the status quo will arrive with it. Barry will be stuck in the Speed Force, but when he eventually returns he'll be getting a new costume. Meanwhile, the entire series will aim to have fun again, harkening back to the earliest run of the show. And on top of all the returning characters, new heroes and villains will be coming to the show.

Just a few weeks ago, we learned that The Thinker and Elongated Man will make their debut in season 4 of The Flash. With the announcement came character breakdowns for the big bad and new member of Team Flash, respectively. Not long after The Thinker was cast, giving a face to the villainous name. Now, the show's new hero also has an actor.

The CW just announced that Hartley Sawyer will be joining The Flash this season in the recurring role of Ralph Dibny, aka Elongated Man. Sawyer previously starred on Saving the Human Race on CW Seed, the network's streaming service. Though younger than the character is generally depicted in the comics, he should fit right in with the S.T.A.R. Labs crew he'll be joining.

Hartley Sawyer as Elongated Man on the Flash

In the comics, Dibny has a complicated past. Much of his drive comes from the death of his wife, but it's not clear if this will have occurred in the show. Complicating things more is the fact that Ralph Dibny was named as one of the people who died during the particle accelerator explosion back in season 1. Whether this will be a retcon or the death will prove false (and akin to Barry's own coma) is yet to be seen.

Dibny's powers may also present a challenge. Like Plastic Man and Mr. Fantastic, Dibny can stretch, shape, and contort his body in all manner of ways. Even film versions of the Fantastic Four have struggled to pull this off, however, so making it work on a TV budget could prove tricky.

Still, Team Flash will need all the help that it can get. With Caitlin's loyalty uncertain, H.R. gone, and Barry rattled from his time in the Speed Force, Central City will need all hands on deck in order to defeat the evil genius of The Thinker.
