As if a slew of metahumans created by the particle accelerator explosions wasn't enough for speedster Barry and his allies to deal with, season 2 of The Flash has been keeping them extra busy with a new batch of foes traveling through space and time from Earth-2. Though this planet mirrors our heroes' own Earth in many ways, the familiar faces they encounter have often taken very different paths from their doppelgangers.
In the episode 'Fast Lane,' Earth-2's Harrison Wells seems to finally replicate his predecessor's sinister side when he starts stealing Barry's speed for Zoom. When The Flash is a little too slow to save Iris from serious injury, however, Wells fesses up to his crimes. True to his good nature, Barry decides that sending Wells back to Earth-2 permanently and sealing that planet's fate with Zoom isn't the most heroic option.
Despite some reservations, Team Flash agrees to forgive the genius scientist and help him get his daughter back. On next week's 'Welcome to Earth-2,' as the official synopsis explains, it looks like that journey will bring Barry face-to-face with some more startling Earth-2 versions of the people closest to him.
"Barry (Grant Gustin), Wells (Tom Cavanagh) and Cisco (Carlos Valdes) journey to Earth-2 to rescue Wells’ daughter, Jesse (guest star Violett Beane) from Zoom. Barry is stunned when he runs into Earth-2 Iris (Candice Patton) and Joe (Jesse L. Martin), but nothing prepares him for meeting Killer Frost (Danielle Panabaker) and Deathstorm (guest star Robbie Amell). Meanwhile, back on Earth-1, Jay (guest star Teddy Sears) has to take over the Flash’s responsibilities when a meta-human nicknamed Geomancer (guest star Adam Stafford) attacks Central City."
The latest stills from The Flash episode show an Earth-2 that has some definite 1940s, Art Deco inspiration. Whether it's just a moonlighting gig or his actual job, it looks like Joe's doppelganger may be a lounge singer. We can't tell what Iris' occupation is, but it looks like she's still a loving and supportive daughter. Another still from the show illustrates she's also ready to use a handgun when necessary.
Earlier images have given us a peek at Killer Frost and Deathstorm, Earth-2's flipside of the doomed couple Caitlin and Ronnie. Earth-1's Ronnie was half of Firestorm with Dr. Martin Stein (Victor Garber), while Earth-2's Ronnie has taken a darker road to become Deathstorm. Caitlin has had a similar transformation, and the two seem to be living out their evil version of happily ever after.
Fans of The Flash have been wondering about Barry's doppelganger on Earth-2, since Jay has the role as The Flash on that world. While the stills could be interpreted as an Earth-2 Barry with his family counterparts, the synopsis of the show sounds like Earth-1 Barry will only be meeting up with Joe and Iris. This still keeps alive the rumor that Zoom could be an Earth-2 "Evil Barry," an idea actor Gustin wouldn't confirm or deny.
As for Earth-1's troubles, Jay will be facing off against Geomancer, a metahuman with the power to create a series of earthquakes. It looks like he'll be tough to stop, since we learned last December that he'll be tormenting our heroes for (at minimum) the two-episode arc of 'Welcome to Earth-2' and 'Escape from Earth-2.' With all that we've learned so far, it's clear that writer Greg Berlanti's "favorite episodes" on The Flash will also be, as promised, "the craziest episodes" ever.
The Flash returns with 'Welcome to Earth-2' on Tuesday, February 9 at 8pm on The CW.
